Alarming statistics like this remind us of  how much work we still need to do as a human society. As long as wars, climate change and harsh economic conditions continue to ravage lives and uproot people from their homelands, vulnerable people will continue to seek safety and a better life elsewhere. It is imperative that world leaders provide safe and fair passage for refugees and migrants across the world. My recent project, We Speak Their Names In Hushed Tones, explores migration from the perspective of families of missing migrants. It follows the stories of family members of missing migrants from Benin City, Nigeria, exploring the psychological effect of the consequences of irregular migrations on families who are left clueless as to the whereabouts of their loved ones. The project utilises virtual reality (VR) and photography and sound, to immerse participants in the rooms of family members as they, the family, narrate their pains, anxieties, fears and unresolved hopes as they await their missing loved ones.

🚨New survey data published a few days ago indicate that in all of 2024, only 5% of Canadians donated to charities that address homelessness.🚨 The data, published earlier this week, is very unfortunate and disheartening as it ultimately impacts the community members that rely on the services and programs offered by such charities, like Fife House. Among other illuminating findings in the survey: - Canadians who earn higher salaries give less and are less likely to donate - 38% of respondents said their common reaction is to avoid or not engage with people living on the streets However, not all that data is gloomy and depressing. 🌟 The survey also found that even when not offering tangible aid, 21% of Canadians indicated that they acknowledge people living on the streets with a smile or engage them in conversation. This piece of data is so important. At Fife House, we too recognize that not everyone is in a position to donate financially especially in the tough economic climate that we are currently experiencing. But there are many ways to show support and help make a difference like volunteering, helping to fundraise, donating gently used items that are needed by people living on the streets or by charities, and in this case, acknowledging people living on the streets with a smile, a hello, or even a nod rather than ignoring them offers them a sense of dignity; that they are not forgotten or unseen. It is also an important acknowledgement of our common humanity and struggle. ❤️🌈 Donate and give if you can. Volunteer or fundraise.
