In light of recent budget decisions, it’s deeply concerning to see the increased financial pressure being placed on hospices. They've been open about growing financial struggles, and these new measures only exacerbate an already precarious situation. How exactly does this promote growth? Hospices provide essential support, relieving the burden on the NHS and community care services while offering dignity and compassionate care to patients and their families. These funding cuts risk hospice closures, job losses, and service reductions, which will, in turn, overwhelm the NHS, increase public spending, and ultimately shift the costs back to taxpayers. The direct impact on communities is undeniable unless changes are made: reduced care, increased strain on an already stretched NHS, and a decline in essential services for the people who need them most.
The RSPCA & Hospice UK are just two of thousands of charities who have now signed NCVO ‘s open letter to the Chancellor, expressing alarm at the potential impact on services of the rise in employer national insurance contributions from April. I was therefore pleased to appear on BBC Breakfast this morning with Chris Sherwood, to spell out the obviously disastrous consequences on hospices and indeed the whole of the UK’s charitable sector, if exemptions or other mitigating actions are not forthcoming.
