We're backing The Mirror's campaign for better regulation of cosmetic procedures in the UK. As the paper highlights, there have been tragic consequences. Plastic surgeon and our Vice-President, Professor Vivien Lees, has been shocked by the lack of government oversight: "The situation is out of control in the UK. Cosmetic procedures must be regulated as soon as possible before there is another death. "In the hands of an untrained person, these procedures place members of the public at significant risk of harm, injury and potential death. The resulting complications can be permanent, affecting more than just physical appearance. There may be psychological and social repercussions, too. More serious complications may result in the need for emergency medical care, with the NHS picking up the bill for this." We urge the Government to act swiftly to protect patients by closing regulatory gaps in cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures. Operations like liposuction and non-surgical facelifts must only be performed by GMC-registered specialists, and a licensing scheme for non-surgical procedures should be implemented.
