Easter holidays. What Easter holidays? This photo was taken today, Wednesday 10 April, at Sidmouth seafront. Slap bang in the middle of the Easter holidays. Where is everyone? I know, the weather isn’t helping. In fact, it hasn’t been helping for some time now. The brilliant The South West Research Company just published occupancy figures for December to February, and to say it made grim reading doesn’t do full justice to the word grim…. So what’s going on? Is it all just weather? I think not. It seems we’re currently experiencing the perfect storm stopping many Brits from booking a well deserved break: weather, wars, cost of living, political uncertainty, increased competition from unregulated parties. Possibly other factors? In meantime, costs continue to go up… Either way, at this rate it can only be a matter of time before hospitality businesses will start falling over, if they aren’t already. Without Westminster doing a thing. Had we been the Steel industry, or any other more traditional sector, politicians would have been falling over one another trying to raise our plight, yet tourism and hospitality seems completely invisible.
