Reforming electricity markets ➡ the UK Government’s second consultation on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) is now live - huge congratulations to Department for Energy Security and Net Zero! https://lnkd.in/eaynjJeu. This is a MAJOR milestone on the pathway to needed reform that must happen at pace. It is essential reading not only for stakeholders of the GB power market, as it provides the opportunity to have a say in the final design of reforms, but also essential reading for stakeholders and experts in other countries. The document clearly sets out why reforms are needed and sheds some light on the complexities, trade offs, risks and interactions that must be considered when reforming electricity markets. Electricity markets, however, are part of wider energy systems – Cian McLeavey-Reville of National Grid ESO discusses REMA and these wider interactions in a blog published today. #innovation #netzerocarbon #electricitymarkets

The UK Government's decision to establish an independent, publicly-owned Electricity System Operator is a bold move towards accountability to the public rather than private shareholders. It's intriguing to see this shift and its potential implications. The choice of the term "Energy" over "Electricity" makes me wonder if they plan to also include wider coordination across different energy sectors including heating/cooling. Exciting times ahead! #energy #regulation

Alberta announces plans for a day-ahead market, the introduction of new market power mitigation measures, negative pricing and other comprehensive changes to renew and reinforce its electricity sector. In an effort to add to the discourse, our Alberta and Ontario experts compare and consider Ontario’s market renewal experience with Alberta’s proposed renewed electricity market (REM). #BLGPublication #Electricity #Energy

Transforming the UK Electricity Market: REMA consultation The Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) was launched in April 2022 with a purpose to deliver reforms to the electricity market in Great Britain. The UK government made a commitment in the British Energy Security Strategy to undertake an all-inclusive review of electricity market design, focused on three major objectives designed to develop a future ready energy system. The core objective for the REMA programme is reform of the electricity market to facilitate the decarbonisation of the UK electricity system by 2035, whilst ensuring security of supply is achieved and cost effectiveness is delivered. Alberta has committed to keeping its energy only electricity market - resisting the introduction of a capacity market. But to address the government's concerns regarding security of supply and affordability it is proposed to be a "Restructured Energy Market". The REM, as it is called, will result in a significant overhaul of the market, with the the AESO to propose fundamental design changes by early 2025, yes that soon. See the latest Insight that my colleagues put together to learn more about the scope and timeline for these changes. #BLGPublication #Electricity #Energy

Heather Exner-Pirot of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute makes the case for natural gas in the Hub, arguing for it to continue being part of Canada's energy mix due to its affordability, reliability, and role in energy security. "With an addition of a million Canadians a year, it is hard to see how our current and planned electricity generation could replace our incremental natural gas needs on a very cold day. Yet that is the situation that regulators in B.C. and Ontario are engineering." #energy #naturalgas https://lnkd.in/gjYQbHwe

Any effort to "evaluate options within an established timeline (for example, within a year) that will increase the Ontario Energy Board’s oversight role over electricity procurement activities so that future decisions impacting electricity rates are financially prudent and consistent with the anticipated demand for electricity" would be extremely challenging, given the plethora of parties likely to engage, and the extreme polarization of views. I doubt that it is feasible given the current procurement construct.
