#aquacares National Food Bank Week, held during the second week of October, is not only a week-long food drive but also a time to raise awareness of the narrow line between a full cupboard and an empty one. Aqua partners with All Faiths Food Bank and the Food Bank of Manatee to help stop childhood hunger. For children, food insecurity is particularly devastating. Not having enough healthy food can have serious implications for a child’s physical and mental health, academic achievement, and future economic prosperity. Aqua is not just a partner, but a leader in the fight against childhood hunger. Our goal is to make a sustainable impact on children's lives, ensuring that hunger is not another obstacle they have to overcome while striving for a safe and happy home. Today is World Day of Social Justice. At Foodbank NSW & ACT, we know there are still many barriers preventing people from accessing the food they need. That’s why we make it our mission to tackle food insecurity and provide our communities with equitable access to food, no matter who you are or where you live. With the support of our partners, donors and volunteers, we do this by: 💜Collaborating with industry and partners to source essential food items. 💜Distributing 65,000+ meals daily through 700+ community partner organisations. 💜Offering nutritious breakfasts to students in 600+ schools. 💜Hosting pop-up markets to supply fresh produce in regional areas. 💜Providing crisis support as first responders during disasters in NSW and the ACT. #WorldDayOfSocialJustice #FoodbankNSWACT #FoodInsecurity #CommunityPartners #SupportLocal #FoodRelief #EndHunger #SocialJusticeForAll

From the #Foodbank Hunger Report 2024: "Food relief charities are continuing to experience heightened demand, not only because of ongoing need in the community, but also due to an increasing awareness amongst those in food insecure households of where to seek support (47%, up 12% on 2023). 26% of food insecure households have accessed formal food relief in the past 12 months, up from 24% in 2023. This increase has been driven by those who are severely food insecure, 30% of whom have accessed help in 2024 vs 26% in 2023.” Huge shout out of thanks & gratitude to those making an impact already in this space. What can we do?

Far from unique to New Zealand! Since the pandemic and subsequent declines in economic opportunities for the “average” worker, many families find themselves in dire straits. AI seems to be proposed as a way to reduce employment opportunities in many industries. This comes at a huge societal cost if not carefully managed. Bad actors are also using AI to create yet more devious schemes that extort money from those who cannot afford the diversion of their resources. This Brave New World we find ourselves in requires some radical new thinking to develop solutions. Governments and individuals need to be asking what else can I and we do to show more compassion to those in need. What else can I/we do to help civilization move forward? Do not ask what can I do to line my pockets at the expense of others,but ask what can I do to address the inequality and inequity that are so rampant in modern society. As George Orwell warned in “1984”, all men are created equal but some are more equal than others. That kind of thinking is not what the world needs now.

This is not progress.

There is pain and suffering in many places, Gaza, Ukraine, the Sudan and many many more. We may feel helpless in the face of that suffering, especially when it happens far away. But there is real suffering right here, in Aotearoa. 1 in 5 people do not have the food they need. And we are not helpless, we can hold our government accountable, we can speak up and we can and must do better #FoodForThought #FundingCutsCutPotential
