🚗💡 From skeptic to advocate: My mind-blowing journey in the automotive industry! When I first entered the automotive world, I had no idea I was stepping into an industry that would become a beacon for others. Today, I'm continually amazed by how far we've come. Remember cars from the 80s and 90s? Now, compare them to today's vehicles. The transformation is mind-blowing! 🤯 Take spark plugs, for instance. What once seemed like a simple piece of metal in a porcelain insulator now embodies decades of engineering prowess. We've gone from replacing them every few hundred miles to them lasting the entire life of a car! This journey towards excellence isn't just about longevity. It's about: • The relentless pursuit of zero defects • Groundbreaking safety innovations • The delicate balance of cost-saving (sometimes redesigning entire components to save mere cents!) and quality What impresses me most? Other industries now look to automotive for advice and guidance. We've become the standard-bearers for quality, efficiency, and innovation. And we're not slowing down! This week in Detroit, electrical and computer engineers from our industry are meeting to advance automotive ethernet networking even further at IEEE 'Tech Day.' It's exciting to see how we're continuously pushing the boundaries of what's possible in vehicle connectivity and communication. Excited to share a project that my colleagues Angela Sekulovska , Magdalena Mandalova , and I worked on with the support of our assistants. We built and presented an inverted pendulum on a cart at the Creative Science Fair. The project uses PID control to stabilize the pendulum and is built with industrial hardware. It’s designed to be a testbench for control algorithms, giving us a platform to explore and expand our knowledge in control systems. This was such a rewarding experience, combining theory with hands-on work to solve real-world challenges. We’re really proud of what we achieved and can’t wait to see how we can build on this in the future. 🌟 Excited to share our latest group project! As part of our 6th semester at the University of Jaffna, our team successfully completed a Robotic Arm Pick-and-Place Simulation 🤖, using RoboDK and MATLAB to automate a manufacturing process. 🔍 Project Breakdown: Simulated a robotic arm picking and placing a disk 🟠 between multiple stations on a production line. Automated the disk’s journey from Station 1 to Station 3, with a labeling step 🏷️ at Station 2. Designed a smooth and efficient trajectory planning system using waypoints 🚀. Verified the arm’s movements with Forward and Inverse Kinematics in MATLAB, ensuring accuracy and precision ⚙️. 🚀 What We Learned: Enhanced our understanding of robotic systems, workspace constraints, and payload handling. Gained hands-on experience with simulation tools and MATLAB for kinematic analysis 🔧. Applied real-world solutions to optimize industrial automation processes 🔄. My graphical user interface software for (psychoacoustic) listening experiments is now published on Zenodo and free to use: https://lnkd.in/eBm4KWxY. It combines a streamlined look of the participant interface with a human-readable result output. We will be using this GUI very intensively for experiments in the PsychoAcoustic LIstening LAboratory (PALILA). A big shoutout to my supervisor Roberto, who has encouraged me to develop this code during the first months of my PhD. Many code updates will follow as we do more listening experiments in PALILA.

In this hands-on crash barrier activity, Amador Valley High School students design and test impact-absorbing structures using a Vernier Motion Encoder Cart. By analyzing the force vs. time graphs generated during the crash tests, students can draw conclusions about the effectiveness of their barrier designs.  This activity can be used to encourage students to apply their understanding of force and impulse while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By comparing the results from different design iterations, students build their understanding of engineering fundamentals and the importance of data analysis in evaluating the performance of their solutions. #EdTech #ITeachPhysics

I’m excited to share our recent work as part of the ARPA-E NEXTCAR project at Southwest Research Institute! I will be presenting this paper at Oral Session 16 on Friday, June 21 at the 2024 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC) in Chicago, IL. Please attend if you can! :) In this work, we developed an Eco-driving algorithm that computes an energy-efficient velocity profile for a Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV), by using traffic light information and incorporating constraints from predictive modeling of surrounding vehicles. It employs quadratic programming to compute the optimal solution in just 1 millisecond (on a real-time controller)! The algorithm has shown to reduce a vehicle’s energy consumption by 12-15% over urban corridors, verified using large-scale (traffic) simulations and dynamometer testing. Importantly, it is scalable to different vehicle classes and powertrain types.
