We’re thrilled to announce the success of a new partnership between Biffa, Community Shop, and ISS, designed to create opportunities and make a real difference in people’s lives. Through this collaboration, members of our award-winning social enterprise Community Shop are being supported back into employment. Participating in the pilot of the Progress Academy, ISS facilitated the employment part of the programme, helping members build skills and confidence to re-enter the workplace. For me, something qualifies as passion, only when the activity accrues to some form of financial gain or wealth. I as a person, do not feel passionate about something, unless the activity has an appreciation potential for my family’s wealth, happiness, and wellbeing. But that’s me. I strongly feel it doesn't have to be the same for everyone. For example, consider my mother and my mother-in-law. Two excellent individuals from whom I draw immense inspiration. Their presence provides a calm and coherence to their families. They have no LinkedIn certifications to boost about. They are not part of the 70-hour-a-week workforce. They are also not the Naval Ravikants or Charlie Mungers of the world, and yet when we get up in the morning, their presence acts as the most serene impact on our lives. Thus, I feel the concept of the confluence of passion, family’s well-being, and income/wealth is not important. More importantly, there should be a confluence of passion (internal happiness) and family’s well-being, and the income/wealth equation should be decided by the individuals themselves.

"I really did not know what I wanted to do when I started with Allegiant, but I can tell you that the shock of the transition from 20 years of service was hard on me those first 3 weeks, and I feel into a pretty hardcore depression. I think that is the magic of this program, it doesn't assume that you will bounce back after doing one thing for so long. The people who created this program know that you have to deal with that, first, before you can even begin to figure out the rest, and I think the initial floundering is where people get stuck when transitioning. Allegiant being there, giving me structure, giving me guidance, and providing resources for jobs and strategy for getting them, volunteer opportunities, and general emotional support was life-saving. I don't think anyone knows how transitioning is going to hit until it happens, and you can't predict what to expect, so it can be a very confusing time. Allegiant gives you the time and space to figure it out, while also bombarding you with resources that actually make a difference. Offer negotiation, mentorship, understanding VA claims, budgeting, and the people to network and share with. Those are the things that we worry about and need. The support from the staff is amazing because they give an honest take to their own transitions. This is what transitioning service members need. With all of this, I was able to get a job pretty much immediately, and negotiate the pay I needed.
