Synthetic chemistry approach yields new compounds with potential biomedical applications Researchers at Rice University have successfully synthesized a group of natural compounds known as fusicoccanes. The molecules, found in various living organisms, exhibit diverse biological activities, including the ability to modulate protein-protein interactions within biological systems. The study led by Hans Renata, associate professor of chemistry, marks a significant advancement in chemical synthesis techniques, leveraging modern organic chemistry and engineered enzymes. The research was published May 6 in the journal Nature Chemistry. Regents' Professor of Chemistry and GRA Eminent Scholar Binghe Wang has published new research which finds a common ingredient used in lab experiments, called DMSO, can impact measurements of harmful molecules in cells. Time to unveil my latest cover design, inspired by an article by Helen Hailes and Tom Sheppard on biocatalytic fluorination in organic synthesis! In this paper, they explore an innovative approach to creating enantio-enriched sp3 fluorides using biocatalysis. The team has developed an ingenious method that harnesses the power of ene reductases (EREDs) to perform stereoselective reduction of α-fluoroenones and α-fluoroenoates, resulting in the formation of valuable fluorine-containing compounds. Here are some of the highlights of this research: ⏣ A series of functionalised chiral fluorinated compounds were synthesised with remarkable yields and stereoselectivities. ⏣ The biocatalytic process was successfully scaled up, demonstrating its potential for industrial applications. ⏣ Computational docking studies were carried out, shedding light on the mechanism of stereoselectivity in the enzymatic reduction process. This approach represents a significant leap forward in the field of organofluorine chemistry, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional synthetic methods for the preparation of chiral fluorine-containing molecules! Stabilizing Triplet Nitrenes Author: ChemistryViews Shengfa Ye, Gengwen Tan, and colleagues, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian, China, have successfully isolated and characterized a thermally stable triplet nitrene (MsFluid*-N, pictured above). Triplet nitrenes are highly reactive and have short lifetimes, therefore, their isolation in the condensed phase under ambient conditions is challenging. However, nitrene-involved reactions are one of the most practical approaches for synthesizing nitrogen- containing molecules. The researchers attribute the high stability of their triplet nitrene to the steric hindrance and effective electron delocalization provided by the supporting bulky hydrindacene ligand. First, the team synthesized the azide precursor, MsFluid*-N3 by reacting a lithium salt of the hydrindacene ligand with tosyl azide (TsN3). The precursor was subjected to photolysis in benzene solution at 0°C using an UV lamp (313 nm). After five hours of irradiation, the triplet nitrene MsFluid*-N formed. The C–N bond length in the triplet nitrene was measured as 1.320(3) Å, which is shorter than the C–N bond in the corresponding amine (1.404(5) Å). A shorter C–N bond typically suggests greater double bond character. The researchers also explored the reactivity of the triplet: When photolyzed in THF or n-hexane, it decomposed rapidly to form an amine, likely through hydrogen abstraction from the solvent. Reacting MsFluid*-N with trimethylphosphine produced a phosphinimide. In aziridination reactions, MsFluid*-N reacted with styrene to form an aziridine via a [1 + 2] cycloaddition. This requires safer and more sustainable electrolytes where solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are a viable alternative to the flammable liquid electrolytes used nowadays. However, SPEs are characterized by poor ionic conductivity compared to their liquid equivalents, preventing large-scale implementation. Furthermore, to meet the increasing production rate of batteries, alternative battery chemistries based on more abundant resources than Li are explored. To address these matters, a fundamental understanding of ion transport in SPEs for a range of relevant cations is vital in the development process. In summary, this thesis contributes toward the understanding of ion transport in systems belonging to “next-generation” batteries, where SPEs for lithium-metal batteries as well as for cations “beyond Li” are considered to play an important part.

This week is the workshop of the winners of the 2023 Chemistry Competition: In very recent years, the synthesis, derivatization and application of organic small rings have attracted the attention of both academia and industry worldwide. This has led to a rapid increase in the number of scientific publications and patents dealing with the chemical construction of such energy-rich strained rings. This workshop will focus on small organic rings. I'm thrilled to announce that our research paper has been published in the Journal of Chemical Research and Technology! This study, conducted in collaboration with my colleagues Aisha and Mujahid Nasir Hussain, focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a Nickel(II) complex with a Schiff base ligand. Our research reveals the compound's unique properties, including its solubility, melting and decomposition points, and non-electrolyte behavior among others. The paper provides valuable insights into the composition and behavior of this complex, highlighting its potential for future applications in coordination chemistry.
