Would you want to know what could be the effect of a protective membrane in your freeze-drying cycle? Lyoprotect® is a high-performance membrane combining the feature of being a sterile barrier, protecting from contaminants, together with a minimum resistance to the solvent vapors coming from sublimation. Freeze drying cycles are negligibly affected when including Lyoprotect®. As per the small porous size of the membrane, the vapor flow is always in molecular regime (collisions with the membrane rather than between the vapor molecules), and consequently the resistance is nondependent with the pressure. Nevertheless, the high vacuum required for freeze drying processes, entails high speeds for the vapors crossing the membrane (up to 5 m/s). Pressure gradients are setting the sublimation front temperature; the temperature of the freeze dryer shelves, and chamber pressure, should be carefully selected according to it.
