As an Associate Director at BCL Legal, leading our London practice, I've seen the landscape for international lawyers seeking roles in the UK's bustling capital. Here's a distilled essence of strategies that can help you navigate this competitive market: 🔍 Research Thoroughly: Understand the legal market in London. It's dynamic, diverse, and highly competitive. Familiarize yourself with the key players, the prominent law firms, and the sectors that are thriving. 🌉 Bridge the Qualification Gap: Ensure your qualifications are recognized. For non-UK lawyers, this may involve taking the SQE to convert your qualification to a UK one. 🌐 Leverage Your Unique Perspective: Emphasize your international experience. London law firms value diverse perspectives that can navigate cross-border complexities. 🤝 Network, Network, Network: Build a robust network both online and offline. Attend legal events in London, join professional groups, and engage with the legal community on platforms like LinkedIn. 📝 Tailor Your CV: Highlight your relevant experience and adapt your CV to the UK market. 💼 Engage with Specialist Recruiters: Partner with recruiters who specialize in placing international lawyers in London. At BCL Legal, we understand the nuances of this transition and can provide tailored support. 🐾 Show Your Human Side: Don't be afraid to showcase your personality. My cocker spaniel often features in my conversations, reminding my network that behind the legal expertise, there's a person with passions and a life outside work. 📈 Stay Informed: Keep abreast of UK-specific legal developments and trends. Being knowledgeable about recent changes can give you an edge in interviews and networking conversations. Remember, securing a legal role in London is not just about your qualifications and experience; it's also about how well you can integrate into the legal community and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of London's legal sector. #LegalCareers #LondonLaw #InternationalLawyers

⚠️ potentially offensive content to those practicing law in The North ….. Travelling back up north at the weekend and seeing signs for The North invoked a sense of nostalgia. Whenever driving back from visiting extended family (Worcester) those signs meant, to us as kids, that we were nearly home…. It also got me thinking of a conversation with an aspiring lawyer studying for A-levels. When asked if interested in working at a firm such as Wilkin Chapman Solicitors the response was a flat “no”. Why? Said student wanted to work in the City. Why? A. the quality of the work. The perception (or rather misconception) that only London/City law firms have exciting, interesting and challenging work and clients. B. career satisfaction & progression - it could not be delivered by a northern law firm. Those practicing outside of London know it isn’t the case; we work in fantastic firms with excellent career prospects, doing high quality work for impressive clients. The challenge is there for the taking, it’s not solely reserved for the City. Of course, everyone is different and it’s horses for courses, but to be so steadfast and resolute at such an early stage was interesting. I didn’t get to find out the genesis of the opinion. I know what narrative I will be setting. #TheNorth #Opportunities #Challenges #Progression

Embracing New Challenges: A Journey of Growth, Independence, and Ambition ✨ As I approach the completion of my Master’s in International Commercial Law, I find myself reflecting on the significant milestones I have achieved over the past year. One of the reasons I put off starting my career for several years after graduating was the belief that I had to live in the City and “work in corporate” to land a job in law. How wrong I was! Here’s what I wish I’d known earlier: ❤️ There are incredible opportunities up North. 🏙️ You don’t need to be in London to have a fulfilling career. 🪄✨ You don’t need to work at a Magic Circle firm to be a brilliant lawyer. 👔Roles in areas outside of corporate and commercial law can be just as successful, with diverse and exciting opportunities. Keep your mind open about both location and practice area and avoid having self-limiting beliefs. There are amazing firms regionally too with both a local and national/ international reach. With 9 years PQE and more than a decade of experience in private client services, I’ve had the privilege of working with fantastic clients and building a rewarding career right here in the North East; mainly at top-tier firms. Don’t let preconceptions about location or practice area hold you back. There are many amazing firms like Irwin Mitchell operating in various locations. Keep an open mind. Your journey can be just as fulfilling in a place that suits you. 🌟 📸 credit to Reuters - Angel of the North X Northern Lights #AspiringLawyers #AspiringSolicitors #LegalCareer #LawyerLife #NorthEastLaw #CareerJourney #OpportunitiesEverywhere #OpenMindSuccess #BeyondTheCity

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙡𝙖𝙬 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝? Aside from the obvious one of wanting to recruit the brightest legal talent, one thing one of our New York clients once told my colleague Jonathan Walmsley really sticks out. This partner said to him that whilst they could recruit another New York based lawyer from another Wall Street firm who would be plug and play, there would be no added excitement about being in New York per se. It's business as usual. Bringing an Australian or Canadian into the team added energy and their sheer excitement about being in New York, brought an X factor to a team dynamic where the net positive contribution outweighed the additional expense of recruiting from overseas. For candidates: we are one of the world's largest specialist legal recruitment firms with offices in London, New York, San Francisco, Houston, Los Angeles, Dubai, Sydney and Brisbane. From these bases we recruit into all corners of the world. We can give you a full global picture of opportunities open to you. If you are an Australian or Canadian lawyer thinking about how best to plan a move over to the US, or you are getting FOMO from all of your friends making the move - get in touch! #internationalrecruitment #biglaw #law #hiring #newyork #losangeles #australia #canada
