For anyone interested in rural justice and rural attitudes toward law, this paper from UC Davis Legal Studies is worth a read. "Among the topics addressed are rural legal consciousness, including attitudes toward law and the state more broadly; the rural lawyer shortage and its impact in different substantive contexts (e.g., environmental justice and water law, heirs' property, other aspects of racial justice); and a range of administration-of-justice contexts (e.g., criminal, immigration, housing).

❓ What is the law really❓ 💡 Some may say it is just statutes and case law, but it is actually something much deeper. 💡 Indigenous wisdom offers profound insights into the interconnectedness of all beings and the laws that govern our world. 🌿 This ancient knowledge invites us to consider law as an integral part of the natural world, a force that connects all living beings. 🌿 When we ignore these laws, we risk imbalance and harm. ❓ Are you ready to challenge your understanding of law❓ 💪 Join our (re)purpose law online course for our last cohort of the year, starting on the 16th of September to explore a new perspective. 👇 Check out the links in the comments to learn more. https://lnkd.in/dqq6y3kx #climatechange #biodiversityloss #lawyers #law #legalprofession #legal #lawyersforgood #sustainability #purpose

💡 Lawyers often think in terms of legal statutes and precedents. ❓ But what if the law was not contained only in these but was a living tapestry, woven from stories passed down through generations❓ 💡 This is the essence of Indigenous Law, also called the First Instructions - a rich system that emphasises collaboration and harmony. 💡 Stories serve as intellectual resources, guiding communities in resolving disputes and living well with the Earth. Here’s why Indigenous Law/First Instructions are relevant to all lawyers: 🌿 Focus on relationships 📍 Indigenous Law/First Instructions foster respectful connections with others and nature, promoting accountability and restoration. 🌿 Collective responsibility 📍 Individuals are part of a larger web, with obligations to the community. 📍 This perspective can enrich your understanding of social justice, among many other things. 🌿 Living traditions 📍 These stories are not relics of the past, but tools for active problem-solving in the present. 💡 Understanding Indigenous Law/First Instructions can broaden your legal toolkit and bring a new dimension to how you approach conflict resolution and social responsibility.
