Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a toolkit for the first Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month, to be observed January 2025. Treatment Month raises awareness of the benefits and availability of evidence-based treatments for people with a substance use disorder; addresses barriers to treatment, including stigma; and normalizes seeking help. The toolkit includes information about weekly themes, social media graphics and messaging, a webinar background, and resources that public health organizations, treatment providers, professional associations, and others can use to spread awareness of Treatment Month. A staggering 93.5% of adults with a substance use disorder did not receive any form of treatment in the past year. This alarming statistic underscores the immense barriers to accessing necessary care and support for those struggling with substance use disorders. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach: increasing awareness, reducing stigma, improving access to affordable treatment options, and supporting individuals through comprehensive mental health services. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by substance use disorders. #SubstanceAbuse #MentalHealth #TreatmentMatters #Healthcare #Support 🌟🩺

May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, and it's crucial to recognize the prevalence of mental illness in the U.S. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), more than one in five adults grapple with #mentalhealth conditions. Sadly, not everyone receives the support they need. Conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, and borderline personality disorder can be misdiagnosed or overlooked altogether. One significant issue contributing to misdiagnoses is rushed diagnoses and treatment. At HHP Law Group, we understand the gravity of failing to diagnose or misdiagnose a #mentalillness – it's a serious medical error. During this awareness month, we advocate for accountability. If a #misdiagnosis leads to lasting harm, patients have legal recourse. We're here to support and guide them through their options.

According to Mental Health America, 50% of adults in Minnesota with mental illness do not receive treatment. Noticing this trend in our community, PrairieCare has expanded services for adults to help more people needing treatment. Our adult Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Brooklyn Park and Edina are now accepting patients. With increased openings, adults can get the treatment they need and deserve. Early on in my leadership career I became quite aware of how systems can manipulate/misinterpret data to project a specific narrative. This is such a great example of that. As a leader in MHSU, I'm so deeply concerned by the misinformation being shared here, and I hope anyone reading this thinks critically about this conversation and seeks out data, experience, and thoughts from others across the sector before forming an opinion. I have worked across the entire continuum of MHSU. I am also a woman with lived experience who has accessed services across the entire continuum, both voluntarily and involuntary. I wish there was a 'walk a mile in my shoes' approach to this work as I think it would do amazing things to shift the 'us vs them' and 'we're right and you're wrong' approach to solving COMPLEX problems. I am all about advocacy and the need to ensure our healthcare systems serve people in a safe way. I'm also about ensuring our workforce is protected and supported because those of us in clinical operations are the ones having to enact care. So, until you've had a patient light themselves on fire in front of you because they're so psychotic due to their stimulant use or your entire MHSU emergency department team has to recover from one of the six most violent incidents in the province, well, personally, your opinions are hard to hear. Maybe Health Justice wants to be the first to step into clinical operations to actually understand the complexity of the work we do in health? Please reach out if your lawyer group wants to tour some of our complex MHSU programs! #healthequity #traumainformed #healthinequities #securecare #harmreductionsaveslives #addictionmedicine
With calls for Riverview to reopen as a simple solution to a complex problem, it is important to know that there are already many facilities in BC where people can be detained and involuntarily treated. There were only 662 patients at Riverview Hospital in the year 2000, now there are over 20,000 people detained under the Mental Health Act in BC every year. While Riverview Hospital closed in 2012, there are currently over 70 facilities in BC where people can be detained for mental health and substance use health treatment throughout the province.
