Now that Bapak Prabowo has taken the reigns, his 08 strategy is of paramount importance to our nation (0% poverty 8% growth) However we seem to have a lot of homework ahead of us. Put aside for a moment (how can we really) the mountain of debt that is due; which adds to our constant shortage of working capital and starving for FDI.. that aside we seem to be facing deindustrialization. An horror scenario, as what we really need is jobs creation, especially in manufacturing and industry. (link data ie post from pak Gregorius) So with that in mind this news from the Industrial ministry to push direct imports into Bitung, Kupang, Sorong seems half baked. Unless these imports are specific bulk material that can economically reach these ports? If not, what the goverment ought to be doing is have imports for these regions all go into Makassar new port as a hub for the east. Why? 1) Makassar new port container terminal has already been built to global standards and is not yet fully optimized 2) Critical mass and economies of scale can be achieved this way ie Makassar as a hub for Eastern Indonesia. 3) Imports in there will create a circular economy ie reduce costs as volumes go up plus the empty containers can be used for exports, making exports cheaper vs current need for empty repo from Surabaya 4) Makassar airport is also well connected 5) With plans to merge Pelni and ASDP under Pelindo, one could ostensibly create the right schemes or incentices for onward economical delivery from Makassar to these and other smaller ports in East Indonesia. This is a real quick win and low hanging fruit for the economy rather than reinvent the wheel pushing imports directly to regions where relevant infrastructure is not ready in the current phase. (in fact pushing now will make imports there expensive and detrimental to the actual goal) We should be focussing and coordinating where the logistics ecosystem exists, not a scattergun approach which beyond rhetoric is not viable. https://lnkd.in/gUQS4UZR I hope the goverment considers this and pushes this initiative via Makassar instead. #indonesia
