With just over a week until the #paris2024 Opening Ceremony (along the River Seine, no less), the summer of elite sport rolls on. Having recently done a spotlight on the legal issues that have dominated the lead-up to Paris, this second part is focussed on the contentious/regulatory matters that may well arise during the Games itself. In this article, I examine: ▶ Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter (re protest); ▶ Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter (re commercialisation of image); ▶ Disputes before the CAS Ad Hoc Division and CAS Anti-Doping Division (both of which are operating temporary offices in Paris); ▶ Other integrity issues (e.g. competition manipulation, illegal betting and so-called "technological" doping); and ▶ Ambush or parasitic marketing - the bane of "official" Olympic and Paralympic sponsors/partners. There is, of course, an element of crystal ball gazing in predicting what may go wrong, and the appeal of sport is often its unpredictability. The debate sparked by comments from sports insiders during the recently concluded Paris Olympics highlights a crucial difference between the dedication and physical demands of Olympians compared to professional footballers. As someone working in the industry, I feel it’s necessary to share my perspective: In the world of sports, it's easy to fall into the trap of comparing Olympians with footballers, but it's essential to recognize the unique demands of each discipline. Footballers, who are engaged in up to four different competitions with matches every three days, face an extremely demanding schedule that requires a sophisticated approach to preparation and recovery. Statistics show that the intensity and frequency of these matches can significantly increase the risk of injuries, making the role of physical trainers critical. While it’s tempting to reduce these discussions to casual conversations, it’s vital to base our opinions on facts and a deep understanding of the complexities involved in different sports. Italy is a country full of passion, but let’s channel this energy into informed discussions, not easy judgments. In addition to being the favourites to top the medal table at Paris 2024, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (Team USA) arrives in France as the nation with the most followers across the main social networks. The Brazilians also stand out. In fact, according to GWI, 78% of Brazilians say they use social media as a second screen when watching TV.
