The role of subsistence farming is continuously decreasing both in urban and rural Hungary. The paper published in Rural Sociology, written by Imre Kovách and Boldizsár Megyesi, shows that it is a multi-factored phenomenon, influenced by economic, societal, discursive, and policy factors; interestingly, sustainability plays a minor role in it. Individual values are important in engaging in food self-provisioning. You can read the whole article here: https://lnkd.in/dNiHDsEn Or listen to the podcast (in Hungarian): https://lnkd.in/dRHrK3zT

Day 8/30 of Academic Journals Study Socio-ecological systems (SES) simply refers to the interconnected nature of human activity with the biosphere. Some of these social (human) activities have economic, cultural, political undertones while the ecological systems include the physical environment and its interaction with living organisms. I did a deep study on how to identify research gaps during the early hours of today and I decided to re-read this article by Professor Merz this evening. Here, she talks about her research on the need for improved research on socio-ecological systems in Biotropica. I believe that the need for a holistic approach towards the study of socio-ecological systems in contrast to studying sociology and ecology as two separate concepts is a big research gap. Because, a more interconnected study of sociology and ecology will provide deeper insight into how social elements fuse with ecological elements. I also believe that changes in either sociological or ecological elements directly influences policy making. For this reason, there's a need for a robust feedback and observation mechanism that will help us understand how changes to ecological elements directly impact social elements and vice versa; leading to policy formation

Representing the first major attempt to flesh out sporting relations within the Anthropocene, this special issue of the International Review for the Sociology of Sport welcomes both empirical and/or theoretical contributions that extend our understanding of the socio-environmental and material relations of sport. Notably, we specifically encourage interdisciplinary contributions that engage with, or ‘trouble’ (Haraway, 2016), existing socio-natural associations and other sociological relations.

Dear colleagues, we are looking for a proposal for the next volume of International Studies in #Maritime #Sociology to be published in 2025 or 2026. International Studies in Maritime Sociology disseminates peer-reviewed research on maritime topics including but not limited to maritime labor, the culture of maritime spaces, marine environmental issues and society, the sociology of the use of marine resources (e.g., fisheries and extractive industries), maritime migration routes, maritime policies, and marine and maritime tourism. The volumes in the International Studies in Maritime Sociology series assemble perspectives from various social science disciplines on the aforementioned topics in order to facilitate an interdisciplinary understanding of the relationship between the sea and society. Manuscripts should be at least 80,000 words in length (including footnotes and bibliography). Manuscripts may also include illustrations and other visual material. The editors will consider proposals for original monographs, edited collections, translations, and critical primary source editions. Authors are cordially invited to submit proposals and/or full manuscripts by email to the publisher Jason Prevost (prevost@brill.com). https://lnkd.in/et3nWGPe
