❗The European elections are fewer than two weeks away. The next European Parliament will have its work cut out for it: the climate crisis, Russia's war of aggression, enlargement, dirty money and democratic backsliding threaten to put the EU's legitimacy at stake if not tackled properly. To do this, we need an accountable and transparent EU that's protected against corruption, both internally and externally. Here are our demands: 🔍The EU institutions must strengthen their ethics and integrity frameworks, including by ensuring effective monitoring, oversight and enforcement. 💶The EU must step up the fight against illicit financial flows and promote greater financial and business integrity. ⚖️The EU must defend the rule of law against internal and external threats. Civic space must be protected. Read our manifesto in full detail here: https://lnkd.in/e5RTMkK2 #euelections #democracy #transparencyinternational

Turning Points: The Fight Against Disinformation in 2024 This year marks a critical turning point in combating disinformation, as the U.S. launched sanctions and legal actions to counter Russian influence ahead of the 2024 election. Disinformation, often a tool of foreign powers like Russia and China, isn't just geopolitical sabotage, it's a reflection of our shifting relationship with truth! From conspiracy theories to coordinated campaigns, this crisis isn't about gullibility it's about a fundamental distrust of authority and mainstream narratives. Communities often seek alternative "truths," finding validation in echo chambers that intensify scepticism and, at times, incite harmful actions. While education and transparency are key to combating disinformation, reactive measures like fact-checking won't suffice. The EU's Disinformation Code and U.S. initiatives like "Rumor vs. Reality" highlight the need for proactive solutions. The battle against disinformation is both urgent and winnable, provided we prioritize critical thinking, collective effort, and robust digital policies.
