Understanding and supporting our children with learning differences can be quite a journey. I recently came across some insights on advocating for kids with dyscalculia, and it struck a chord. As someone who has seen students struggle in math, the challenges they face are not just academic but deeply emotional too. It's crucial to foster an environment where children feel confident in their abilities. One of the key points highlighted was the importance of collaboration with teachers and professionals, which can make a significant difference in a child's educational experience. Taking the initiative to communicate openly ensures that the child's needs are addressed in a supportive manner. What resonated with me the most is that advocacy is not just about pushing for change; it's about empowering our children to express their own needs and feelings. Encouraging them to share their experiences helps build their self-advocacy skills, which are invaluable as they grow. This is really interesting. Something that in my opinion should have happened a long time ago. I wonder if this is only now in place because of the national safety valve that’s happening on the Isle of Wight? My question is, as a starter this is execellent. However, where is the person centered care? Where are the personalised, care and support plans coming from? Who is assessing developing positive behaviour support to ensure these school placements do not fail? Complex needs is exactly that, complex. No one child will be the same. [143/365] It takes everyone to raise a child. The oft-repeated truism of "it takes a village to raise a child" understates the importance of clarifying the roles stakeholders play when doing so. Parents are not the child's teachers. Teachers are not the child's parents. Both play unique yet complementary roles in nurturing the whole child. ---------- Some hard questions should be addressed: 1️⃣ Do we agree on the desired outcomes for the child? 2️⃣ What do we actually mean when we say "home-school partnership"? 3️⃣ Who is more responsible in shaping the child's values? 4️⃣ What happens when a stakeholder is unwilling/unable to play their part? ---------- Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE), in partnership with Whitehatters Limited, is seeking feedback from parents and educators to co-create the future of home-school partnerships (see post below). Breaking Down Barriers 🌟 This afternoon, our Community Anchoring Team at the Rainbow Education MAT came together for an inspiring and focused meeting around one of our most important missions: breaking down barriers to ensure each and every child has the best possible start in life. Our discussions were framed by the latest DfE publication, Keeping Children Safe, Helping Families Thrive, which emphasises the critical role schools play in not just educating children, but also supporting families and building stronger communities. 💡 Becoming Anchor Institutions A key theme of the meeting was how we, as a trust, can further embed ourselves as anchor institutions within our local communities. This means stepping beyond the traditional boundaries of education to provide support, stability, and opportunities for families, helping every child to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. 🔄 Shifting Perspectives on Attendance One of the most impactful discussions was around rethinking poor attendance—not as a problem to solve, but as a symptom of deeper challenges that need addressing. By focusing on the root causes—whether they be related to wellbeing, family circumstances, or systemic barriers—we can create strategies that lead to long-term, meaningful change. ✅ A Shared Commitment to Action Our session was rich with ideas, and we left with a list of practical actions to drive progress, including: Strengthening partnerships with local services to provide wraparound support for families. Expanding outreach programs to build trust and engagement with hard-to-reach families. Developing more holistic approaches to attendance monitoring, ensuring interventions are empathetic and solution-focused. Enhancing staff training to identify and address the early signs of need or vulnerability. Creating family-friendly spaces and events that foster stronger school-community connections. ❤️ Our Mission: Giving Every Child the Best Start At Rainbow Education MAT, we’re determined to ensure that each and every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the best possible start in life. This meeting was a reminder that achieving this requires collective effort, a willingness to listen, and a mindset of continuous improvement.
