Growing in greenhouses in the Netherlands is logical and essential. In the last monthly issue of Primeur I was given the opportunity to give my opinion on the usefulness and necessity of maintaining greenhouse horticulture in the Netherlands. For many countries, Dutch greenhouse horticulture is an example of how to grow more sustainable food and ornamentals. Strangely enough, there is a discussion going on in the Netherlands about, among other things, the economic contribution of greenhouse horticulture. Apart from the fact that climate change only increases the possibilities of high-tech greenhouses to grow sustainable food and ornamental plants, the ecosystem in the Netherlands is unique and important. In this article I have tried to make a plea to emphasize the usefulness of this ecosystem and the global opportunities for high-tech greenhouses in the field of sustainability. I am curious about your opinion. #horticulture #greenhouses #floriculture #eu #sustainability #primeur

It appears that the Dutch politicians intend on converting one of the largest European agricultural exporter into a startup hub without any consideration how to feed these densely populated areas.. Food is essential. Mixed-light climate-controlled greenhouses is the best form of cultivation for a large variety of non-staple crops.

As an outsider looking in, thinking about "re-shoring" food production and renewable energy solutions, the predicament you describe is surprising to me. I often cite the Dutch greenhouse industry as a role model in my efforts to inculcate geothermal into the British and Irish horticulture sector. Thanks for sharing your story Ruud.

Mooi artikel Ruud van der Vliet ! The pressure on our food system will only increase not only because of drought but also because of too much water. We should be proud of the leading Dutch companies in the sector and the CEA ecosystem they represent. In a few decades the only way to grow crops might be in a controlled environment…
