This week I’m in Geneva , Switzerland to report on Namibia progress in implementing the Water Convention Programs. Namibia acceded to the Water Convention in June 2023. As a country that share most river basins in the SADC region, Namibia understands the significance of collaborative efforts in managing these precious resources effectively and the need to form part of the communities that share and jointly manage those water resources. Key outcome after our accession to the Water Convention is the twinning initiative with Finland which is exploring the strategy for monitoring and assessment of transboundary waters. As a country, we faces challenges in effectively monitoring our water resources, and we are hoping that Finland’s expertise in this field will significantly strengthen Namibia’s water resources monitoring and assessment program.

🔬 📊 Did you know? Most water systems evaluated in this new #REALwater baseline assessment in Kenya did not perform adequate chlorination and water often had microbial contamination at the point of collection and at the point of use. Read the report to get details of the baseline findings and implications. In efforts to evaluate the effect of the Water Quality Assurance Fund across diverse contexts in Africa, and explore how efficiently existing professional water quality laboratories can expand their water testing services to rural water supplies, this report describes the baseline status of community-managed water systems in rural Kenya, prior to their enrollment in the Assurance Fund program. 🌏Civic engagement is important for upholding the environmental rule of law, which is a principle of governance where all persons, institutions and entities, including the State itself, are accountable under law. 💡The latest 2023 United Nations Environmental Programme Report on the Environmental Rule of Law (UNEP) found that civic engagement supports the environmental rule of law because "civil society groups and individuals to act as watchdogs, creating accountability for both government institutions and private corporations."* 💡One of the ways Earth & Every empowers civil society is by helping them understand regulatory frameworks so that they can hold decision makers accountable. This month, we published The Guide to the National Koala Recovery Plan, to help people understand the obligations of decision-makers to protect koala habitat. 💡Our tip this week is that the federal Minister for Environment and Water is not allowed to make decisions approving projects if doing so is inconsistent with the National Koala Recovery Plan. Stay tuned as we talk more about this in the coming weeks. Please help us spread the word by sharing this post - we need to get the Guide in the hands of our environmental defenders. *United Nations Environment Programme (2023). Participating in the National WASH Joint Sector Review Conference in Juba, South Sudan, has been enlightening. Teaming up with Basic Water Needs to address the transition from humanitarian to sustainable development in the water and sanitation sector is crucial. Now in Bentiu, witnessing the challenges faced by IDPs underscores the importance of sustainable solutions. We're committed to providing impactful WASH solutions in regions affected by conflict and flooding in Africa. #SustainableDevelopment #WASH #SouthSudan
Attending the National WASH Joint Sector Review Conference in Juba, South -Sudan, alongside my colleague Chunza Brian from Kenya, proved to be an immensely enlightening experience regarding the current state of WASH initiatives in the country. Hosted by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) and numerous other partners, the conference attracted over 300 national and international attendees. With its overarching theme, "Transitioning from Humanitarian to Sustainable Development in the Water and Sanitation Sector," the event served as a focal point for discussions on crucial issues. For us, being newcomers to South Sudan, this conference offered a valuable opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local context and connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. It provided a steep learning curve, culminating in our journey to Bentiu in the northern region of the country, where we are graciously hosted by IOM. The challenges addressed during the conference are vividly exemplified in this region, emphasizing the urgency of sustainable solutions. The situation calls for ambitious yet necessary goals for advancing development efforts in this literally drowned area of the nation.

This is big. It is incredible to hear the United States Global Water Coordinator emphasizing the role of data in accelerating WASH decisions. This isn't a technical staff-level discussion. This is the most senior official in the US Government for international WASH talking about the need to use data to improve decisions. This is what high level commitment to #WASHdata looks like, and it paves the way for transformational programs that leverage data to accelerate efficiency, advance equity, and strengthen resilience.
Thank you to our hosts in Sweden for an engaging and very successful #StockholmWorldWaterWeek! I was energized by the many discussions and sessions with counterparts from the UK, Netherlands, The World Bank, UNICEF, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Veolia, and many more. Through our flagship Action Research Initiative, the US is generating new evidence that will drive improvements in the effectiveness of water, sanitation and hygiene and water resources management programming. It is inspiring to see how REAL-Water’s work is helping improve water provider performance and water safety for rural water systems in Kenya and Ghana. As a result of USAID investments, 69 rural water systems have improved water quality through continuous water monitoring and testing. Watch below for my key takeaways from the week!

📢 🌍 We have signed contracts for two new exciting projects in Moldova: The 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗦𝗮𝗻𝟮𝟴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 project is a new initiative aimed at improving water and sanitation in rural Moldova, set to be completed in 2028 (hence the name ApaSan𝟮𝟴). Building on the successes of previous ApaSan projects, this new initiative funded with EUR 6 million by the Austrian Development Agency will enhance access to safe drinking water and sustainable decentralised sanitation systems and strengthen the capacity of operators and municipalities. The project for 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗼𝘃𝗮 will support communities in Moldova to cope with the additional challenges resulting from the crisis caused by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, such as stress on water supply systems from increasing population and and soaring energy costs affecting budgets of municipalities and people. The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation with CHF 2.7 million as an additional component to our long-term local governance project 𝗠𝗮 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰 (https://ma-implic.md/en/). #SafeDrinkingWater #WaterSupply #sanitation #governance #Moldova #SkatConsulting

🚰 Did you know that 1 in 4 people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water? That 1 in 3 cannot use basic hand-washing facilities? And nearly half of the global population does not have access to proper sanitation such as toilets? 🗺 The world must act urgently to sustainably manage water and sanitation! 📅 From June 10 to 13, the 3rd Dushanbe #WaterDecade Conference, hosted by the Government of #Tajikistan, will aim to further strengthen joint efforts and support the implementation of voluntary commitments, as well as stimulate new partnerships and accelerate action to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development #SDG6. Switzerland's participation in the Dushanbe Conference underscores its engagement to fostering global and regional connections through water cooperation, showcasing the impactful contributions of the Blue Peace Initiative. It will co-host the Interactive Dialogue 4 with Senegal, and discuss the potential of shared water resources ‒ rivers, lakes, and aquifers ‒ to guarantee the right to safe drinking water and sanitation for all. 🤝 Together, we can turn intentions into actions! #WaterAction #SustainableDevelopment #WaterCooperation More infos 👉 https://lnkd.in/dWCS53Cw The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia
