This moment – and the health of our nation – depends on policymakers strengthening the Centers for Disease Control, not weakening it. Critical health organizations like the CDC need support from policymakers to provide stable and sufficient funding, modernized data systems and new authority to collect and report state-level data, especially during public health emergencies. They need tools to fight against ongoing mis- and disinformation which threatens the credibility of sound public health guidance. Lawmakers’ sustained commitment to health equity through these kinds of investments and others will help tear down the barriers to health caused by structural racism and other forms of discrimination so that together we can transform health in our lifetime. https://wapo.st/3CrG9py

Remember when CDC had 600+ public health advisors assigned to state and local heath departments in STD programs actively screening and finding persons exposed to gonorrhea and syphilis? That was a long time ago but it did have an impact on local rates and provided experience that benefitted all parts of CDC.

Expanding chronic disease programs is essential to making America healthy again, and it begins with strengthening critical public health institutions like the CDC. Policymakers must prioritize stable and sufficient funding to ensure these programs have the resources to prevent and manage chronic conditions effectively. Modernizing data systems and granting the CDC new authority to collect and report state-level data are critical for responding to public health emergencies with precision and timeliness. These investments will lay the foundation for transformative change, ensuring that chronic disease programs can drive better health outcomes for every community, now and for future generations.

Y’all are about to learn what life is like in Texas. Health equity, structural racism, discrimination - taken out of our public colleges and universities; new educational standards with Biblical underpinnings for our public schools and voucher systems to undermine public education. The new administration thinks governing is like putting on a TV show. The incoming policy makers goal is to control all information - CDC will not be able to publish or warn without approval from on-site appendages of DC. Gird yourself - and maybe plan to resist. Or were no lessons learned from the last Trump administration? No longer a student - Kings ‘64- Public Health Advisor - CDC 1964-1998 Pennsylvania, New Jersey and NYC.

The Covid pandemic demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of our nation’s and the world’s public health systems. We continue to live in a world that is interconnected, constantly changing, plagued by mis- and disinformation, and vulnerable to serious threats to our health. As Dr. Besser points out, we need strengthen CDC not weaken it.
