We are examining various issues that affect cities in our coverage of elections. Here is an interesting interview done by my colleague Shobana as part of the Know Your MP series. Watch the video.
As India gets ready to vote to decide who will represent the country in Parliament, Citizen Matters is speaking to elected representatives from #Chennai, ahead of the #LokSabha2024elections. As part of this series, we had a chat with Kalanidhi Veerasamy, incumbent MP from #ChennaiNorth constituency. In this video interview, we deep-dived into issues plaguing the residents of the Chennai North constituency, the initiatives he undertook during his term as MP, his poll promises from 2019 elections that he kept, the promises that he failed to fulfil and other pressing issues that need attention. Dr Kalanidhi speaks about improving educational facilities by bringing a Kendriya Vidyalaya School, medical college and hospital, engineering college and improving sports facilities in the region. He also says that he has recommended conducting a health survey in the areas affected by industrial pollution and will work towards decongesting the traffic caused by heavy vehicles. He said converting the reclaimed land from biomining in Kodungaiyur dump yard into a park will serve as a breathing space for the residents. TN Diary - 8 The despair, the irony & the hope! As my TN trip comes to an end & I wait at Madurai airport to board my flight to Delhi, I pen this post summarizing my learnings. I am filled with a whole host of thoughts & feelings and so as I attempt to summarize, I could not think of a better structuring as I have headlined above. The despair: The nepotism & one family rule, the in your face brazen corruption, the brute dominance over almost everything including media, the abject mis governance has led to despair among people. So much so that the people now hark back to Jayalalitha rule & fondly remember her, perhaps even more now than they perhaps did during her lifetime. Add to that the vitriolic and divisive agenda being run by DMK to achieve its vested political interests. The irony: This dangerous cocktail of mis rule & fueling divisive impulses can lead to dire consequences of ruining the state as well as weakening the nation. Calls to annihilate Sanatan Dharma to severe Tamil people from their culture & spiritual heritage, which is our glue and which is what Modi is painstakingly trying to revive to strengthen nation’s unity, Stalin & DMK are hell bent on weakening it and thwart Modi, thereby maintain their hegemony! As they drive their nefarious agenda, ironically, DMK has met its biggest challenge not from Modi but from someone within its own state…. #Annamalai !! The hope: Annamalai is a quintessential ‘Mr. Clean’, in a cruel & corrupt world of politics in general but especially in TN. He is highly educated, honest, a great communicator, humble & down to earth. These are the qualities that endear him to the people who now seem fed up of a political landscape driven by larger than life figures, big egos, money, muscle & dominance! He comes across as a breath of fresh air arousing hope! He is an outsider, quite in the same mould as #Modi was in Gujarat in 2002 & in Delhi in 2014 or as #YogiAdityanath in UP in 2017! Annamalai is a disrupter of all that is wrong in TN politics & that is what has made him a darling of the masses! TN is going through a transformation, a positive one, and Annamalai is driving it, there is no doubt about it. The success of #EnMannEnMakkal corroborates it, the over 20% vote share that top opinion surveys are predicting, reinforces that point! And remember these surveys were before the culmination event of En Mann En Makkal and before Modi & Annamalai have begun campaigning. In my own assessment, BJP seems set to end up at around 30% vote share in Tamil Nadu. In my view, TN in 2024 will be to BJP/NDA what West Bengal was in 2019!! I say this after traveling on ground covering whole of west & south of TN, visiting two of the top three cities, Coimbatore & Madurai, and getting inputs from my networks in Chennai, plus taking inputs from credible national pollsters who are conducting opinion surveys on the ground! #TN_Diaries #india

India @ 75: A Threefold Growth Story by Dasra In 2022, during the 75th year of India’s Independence, a group of civil society organizations and leaders came together as Coalition CSO@75, to measure the quantitative and qualitative contributions of civil society organizations (CSOs) to India’s #developmental milestones. As part of Coalition CSO@75, Dasra has authored three reports to highlight the role of civil society in areas of #education, #publichealth, and #socialjustice. These reports shine a light on landmark interventions by CSOs, consequent transformations, and ground impact across diverse landscapes and timeframes since 1947. This 3-part report is an extension of the larger Non Profit Sector Report by the Coalition, titled “India’s Million Missions: 75 Years of Service Towards Nation Building” and launched in January 2023 at the Jaipur Literature Festival.
