👉 Watch out: Today we continue our "L&R Prevent & Protect Series" and present: Our Pathogen of the Month: Enterococcus faecalis Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium as Causes of Nosocomial Infections in Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Annually, over one million heart ❤️ and vascular surgeries are carried out in Germany, according to the Federal Health Reporting system (jointly supported by the Robert Koch-Institute and DESTATIS). Fortunately, most of these operations proceed without complications regarding infections 😊🚫🦠. However, a specific percentage, depending on the type of surgery, experiences surgical site infections (SSI), which can have a partially high mortality rate ⚠️. Enterococcus spp., ranking second among the most common nosocomial pathogens in cardiac and vascular surgery, includes both Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium 🦠. These are Gram-positive, spherical bacteria 🔵 that can also develop resistance to antibiotics 💊. Studies have shown that a bundle of infection prevention measures is most effective 🛡️, among them for example reducing the number of door openings during a surgery 🚪. Other preventive measures include the prophylactic administration of antibiotics, preoperative full-body washing 🚿, proper hand disinfection by the personnel 🧼, sterile surgical gowns and gloves 🧤, postoperative infection monitoring 🩺, and not changing dressings until after 48 hours 🕗. At L&R, we support you with our strong portfolio and extensive information in implementing these measures 📚.
