Quality assurance (QA) is about process and procedure. Quality control (QC) is about process and procedure. Testing is about practice. They are not synonyms. Specifically, QA != Testing. QA is proactive, preventative and focused on processes during and prior to development. QC is reactive, corrective and focused on final product quality. It is the process that implements the practice of testing, applied to a release candidate. Testing can be applied by both QA and QC. Shift-left testing is concerned with migrating effort from QC to QA. Quality engineering (QE) is an attempt to navigate the office politics between QA/QC practitioners and those engaged in development. Historically it has been difficult to progress from QA to CTO, but not so for engineers. Rename quality roles: problem solved!
