“In the absence of a clear regulatory framework for green hydrogen, investors we have advised have taken solace in the robustness of both Namibia and South Africa’s broader legal frameworks. Both countries have balanced constitutions, and elements relevant to the development of any project – such as contract law – are well-catered for and enforced through an independent judiciary. For the time being, host governments have been turning to existing regulations for their better-established traditional energy sectors to chart a course forward for green hydrogen.” Great business intelligence analysis on green hydrogen developments in Southern Africa including Namibia from S-RM’s Thomas Parker.

🚢 Breaking: World Bank's 2024 report reveals South Africa could tap into a 2.4 million ton green hydrogen maritime fuel market by 2030, positioning its ports as strategic zero-carbon bunkering hubs in global shipping lanes. The convergence of maritime decarbonization and South Africa's renewable energy potential creates a compelling business case: • Eight major commercial ports could serve as green hydrogen production & bunkering hubs • Western Cape province alone shows 46 TWh/year renewable energy generation capacity • Port of Saldanha case study demonstrates viable $4.2B investment opportunity with hybrid wind-solar powered production Leading experts at the World Bank demonstrate the feasibility through detailed technical analysis. The Saldanha Bay project could produce 600,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with infrastructure ready by 2028 according to implementation timelines. Strategic implications point to South Africa becoming a key player in the $300B green maritime fuel market by: • Leveraging existing port infrastructure • Utilizing world-class solar & wind resources • Creating green corridors with major trading partners What's your view: Which ports are best positioned to become early movers in South Africa's green maritime fuel transformation? #GreenHydrogen #MaritimeDecarbonization #EnergyTransition #CleanShipping #AfricanEnergy
