Ola Cabs Aims for $500 Million in IPO, Targets $5 Billion Valuation Read More: https://lnkd.in/dXfsa2DA Ride-hailing giant Ola Cabs plans to raise $500 million through its upcoming initial public offering (IPO), aiming for a valuation of around $5 billion, as reported by Reuters on Friday. Sources mentioned in the report indicate that Ola intends to file its IPO papers with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) within the next three months. Presently, Ola is in discussions with several investment banks, including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi, Kotak, and Axis, to finalize the selection of IPO advisors within a month, as stated in the report. This marks Ola's second attempt to go public, following an unsuccessful endeavor in 2021 to raise $1 billion. In a related development, Ola Electric, a sister concern, filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI on December 22, 2023, proposing to raise funds through a combination of fresh equity shares and an offer for sale (OFS). Additionally, Ola Cabs has announced the cessation of its international operations, redirecting its focus towards expanding its electric fleet within India. Operations have already ceased in New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK). Ola, founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, is a key player in India's startup landscape, striving to revolutionize transportation by offering seamless mobility solutions. Legal Parivar News

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐏𝐎 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐡: A Critique for Indian Startups In the current funding climate, the allure of an IPO for Indian startups is undeniable. But is going public the right move for everyone? As a CXO, it's critical to carefully weigh the potential benefits against the significant challenges before joining the IPO bandwagon. 𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤: • 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚: An IPO doesn't magically solve all funding problems. It opens doors to public capital but also comes with increased scrutiny, regulatory compliance, and pressure to meet shareholder expectations. • 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Going public isn't a one-time event. It marks the beginning of a new era with a relentless focus on quarterly results and public perception. • 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥: IPOs involve selling a portion of your company. This means diluting ownership and potentially giving up some decision-making control. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐩: • 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡: Do you have a consistent track record of revenue growth and profitability? Investors scrutinize these metrics so having a history of revenue growth, profitability, and positive cash flow can make your company more attractive to potential investors. • 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Is the market large enough to support your valuation ambitions? Does your industry have a history of successful public companies? Evaluate the current market conditions and investor appetite for your industry. • 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: Do you have robust internal systems, reporting structures, and strong corporate governance to handle public company demands? Public investors place a premium on transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior. • 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: Have you thoroughly explored other avenues like strategic partnerships, private equity, or debt financing? • 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞: Consider whether your company has reached a sufficient scale and size to justify the costs and complexities associated with being a public company. Typically, larger companies with established operations and significant market presence are better positioned for an IPO. • 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬: Have a clear plan for IPO proceeds to fuel future growth and create value for shareholders. Communicating a compelling growth strategy can help attract investor interest and support a higher valuation. • 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: Is an IPO truly your desired long-term goal, or might a strategic acquisition be a better fit? Consider aligning your IPO with your long-term objectives and exit strategy. An IPO can be a powerful tool for growth, but it's not a guaranteed path to success. Indian startups must thoroughly evaluate their unique circumstances and make decisions based on solid strategic reasoning, not just the hype surrounding IPOs.
