A recent study led by Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, a Diabetes Canada funded researcher at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre, sheds light on the long-term implications of gestational diabetes for women's health. The study aimed to understand how the risk of developing type 2 diabetes evolves across multiple pregnancies. This research provides valuable insights for healthcare providers and women alike, empowering them to make informed decisions to mitigate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes following gestational diabetes. 🌟 National Diabetes Week: 14-20 July 2024! 🌟 As National Diabetes Week begins, advocating for fair access to diabetes technology across Australia is critical. My husband, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for nearly 20 years, and I have witnessed firsthand how technologies like Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices, and soon, an insulin pump, can significantly enhance quality of life. Not all have equal access to these tools, some benefit while others are left behind. With global diabetes rates affecting 1 in 9 adults, it's urgent to unite for equitable tech access. Let's raise our voices together to ensure every Australian living with diabetes has the resources they need. 💪 #NationalDiabetesWeek #DiabetesAwareness

Teresa Muller is a patient and the director of the Chilean Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Muller says one of the most pressing difficulties in Chile is access to health care due to the lack of specialists, reference centers and referral systems across the country (especially in remote areas). “Having quick access to treatment and prompt medical attention makes a significant difference in the patients near future, ensuring a good physical and mental quality of life for them. While the current situation may seem bleak, there is a clear path to improvement. Advocating for the specialization of doctors could lead to more accurate diagnoses and faster, more effective care for our citizens. Until this change occurs, many will continue to struggle to seek necessary care, understand their diagnosis, or receive the treatment they need from our health systems, both public and private. It is also crucial that we improve response times. Only then can we keep pace with this disease and prevent it from claiming more lives.” Learn more about global efforts to improve access to care during #WorldPHDay2024. https://ow.ly/AKLA50RSGfT

We recently collaborated with the Health Innovation Network South London, NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London, and Leicester Diabetes Centre to evaluate the feasibility and acceptance of the Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles for Diabetes (HEAL-D) Online programme. BISI’s contribution was to offer methodological expertise in implementation feasibility assessment. HEAL-D was developed to tackle the problem of low participation levels of type 2 diabetes self-management programmes amongst the African and Carribean communities in the UK. Our collaborative implementation evaluation of HEAL-D Online was positive and shows us its potential in addressing significant health inequalities. Further, whilst the context of the UK may differ from that in Singapore, the methods we applied can be translated – to focus on understanding better the implementation requirements for virtual diabetes services. The number of people with diabetes in Spain has surged by 42% since 2019, according to the Spanish Diabetes Society. This significant increase highlights the growing health challenge posed by #type2diabetes in the country. Currently, diabetes prevalence in Spain stands at 14.8%, affecting one in seven adults, the second-highest rate in Europe. The associated healthcare costs have escalated to €14.5 billion, placing Spain among the top ten countries for diabetes-related healthcare expenditure. Alarmingly, nearly a third (30.3%) of people living with diabetes in Spain are undiagnosed, exacerbating this public health issue. Undiagnosed and untreated diabetes can lead to severe complications, such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and blindness, underscoring the need for improved detection and management. A task worth committing to! #spain #type2diabetes #curalife #prevention #earlydiagnostics
