If water leaks into the service panel, chalky-white corrosion can build up on the screw terminals inside the box. 👉 This #corrosion can ruin connections between the service cable wiring and the branch circuit wiring. Here's another element of vertical pump design that creates unnecessary problems - and potential catastrophic failures, which seems to have occurred in this case. A conventional C-face pump adaptor has a milled/cast opening for the purpose of making sure the drive coupling gap meets the specifications set forth by the respective coupling manufacturer. Many of the pump adaptors in vertical mount applications are sealed and thus do not have the opening. Consequently, the installer has to pay particular attention to getting the gap correct even though it cannot be seen or measured., In this case the installer appears to have miscalculated the depth, which eliminated the vital clearance and applied excessive force to the shafts of both the electric motor and the hydraulic pump. The electric motor suffered a catastrophic bearing failure. If you are trying to establish the correct gap in couplings when it's not possible to see them, I highly recommend that you use Plastigauge. This is just another disadvantage of vertical mount pump design. More to come!
