Following the International Day of Action for Women's Health, I'm thinking disparities and the gender gap in health need to go up in political agendas. This is not only about invisible diseases but overlooked diagnosis and often more limited access to care for women. Let’s make this a priority.

Research and evidence has constantly shown how poverty, patriarchy, and socio-economic inequities often translate into major barriers to maternal and child health access and outcomes. A comprehensive approach that incorporates the intersectionalities of these socio-economic issues into maternal and newborn health interventions is key to not just reducing maternal mortality, but also to empowering women, and promoting equity. These intersectionalities were recognized at a global level at the 77th World Health Assembly last month, which committed to tackling the leading causes of maternal and child deaths, while improving access to maternal, sexual and reproductive, and comprehensive child health services through stronger primary health care, and bridging the socioeconomic barriers to this care. While global commitments like this are a significant step forward, it is essential, now, more than ever, to turn these commitments into action, and build inclusive, equitable solutions which put the needs of women and their communities at the very centre. I delve deeper into my insights from the 77th World Health Assembly in my editorial for the June 24 AlignMNH newsletter. Embracing Intersectionality in Global Health: Towards a Feminist Global Health Policy In the quest for health equity, the necessity for nuanced approaches that address the complexities of health disparities has never been more pressing. This excellent paper advocates for the adoption of Intersectional Feminist Approaches as a cornerstone for more inclusive and responsive health policies. Despite the growing recognition of feminist perspectives in foreign and development policies, their crucial insights remain largely underutilised in the realm of global health policy—a gap this paper seeks to bridge. The entrenched power hierarchies embedded within our global health systems present signifiant barriers to achieving health for all. This paper introduces a framework for developing a Feminist Global Health Policy (FGHP), offering actionable insights on harnessing this approach to dismantle these barriers effectively. Key highlights from the paper include: 1️⃣ Intersectionality as a lens for inclusion: It illustrates how the prevalent biomedical framework in global health often neglects Indigenous knowledge and fails to account for diverse perspectives, underscoring the importance of intersectionality in capturing the full spectrum of health determinants. 2️⃣ Understanding power dynamics: The paper highlights the importance of grappling with power dynamics and structural determinants such as gender, race, and class, which are frequently overlooked by traditional health policies. 3️⃣ Transformative funding shifts: Highlighting the transformative potential of FGHP, it advocates for redirecting funding priorities from profit-centric models to those grounded in feminist principles, thus ensuring the initiative's financial viability and fostering equitable healthcare access. 4️⃣ Community and policy engagement: It stresses the pivotal role of communities, civil society, national policymakers, and multilateral organisations in crafting, enacting, and supporting FGHP initiatives, emphasising the need for their active and meaningful involvement. 5️⃣ Actionable strategies for implementation: The paper calls for the implementation of mechanisms that foster reflection, power shifts, and the engagement with intersectional feminist principles, advocating for a decolonial approach that prioritises health equity and reproductive justice. This paper not only highlights the critical gaps in current global health policies but also offers an important framework for embedding feminist and intersectional principles at the heart of global health initiatives. By recognising the interconnectedness of various determinants of health and the imperative of dismantling systemic barriers, we can pave the way towards a more equitable, accessible, and inclusive global health landscape. #globalhealth #feministpolicy #intersectionality #healthequity #publichealth
