Earlier this month, the United States Space Force hosted military space leaders from 17 other countries in Colorado Springs at the annual Space Chiefs Forum. The event, which was organized by SAF/IA, is part of ongoing #USSF efforts to foster multinational collaboration that builds enduring operational advantages. First held in 2021, the Space Chiefs Forum is a key opportunity for global partners to collectively assess the space security environment, evaluate new cooperative concepts, and discuss steps that can be taken together to maintain the safety, stability, and long-term sustainability of the domain. "Cooperation between like-minded nations is essential to securing our collective interests in space," Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman said. "This forum facilitates constructive dialogues, the inclusion of diverse perspectives, and the exchange of innovative ideas to help us tackle shared challenges and deepen our mutually beneficial partnerships." Some inspiring and reassuring comments from United Kingdom, United States, French, and Canadian military leaders on the crucial importance of space for the future at the recent Farnborough, UK, Space-Comm event. Via Satellite highlights comments from Brig. Gen. G. Michael Adamson, Commander 3, Canadian Space Division, who spoke about the world entering the “third space age,” an age of societal dependency on space-based technologies and growing commercial opportunities, but also one fraught with potential conflict as multiple stakeholders, some considered adversaries, vie for access to the domain. Collaboration in all dimensions is key, not the least being in national defense and security. “We work with closely with our allies. Our program of development has to be complementary. Not one nation can do it alone. Space is a critical enabler for all military forces. We need to understand what is going on in space,” Adamson said. Let’s hope our political leaders are paying attention. #NationalDefense #NationalSecurity #SpaceSecurity

The power of the Joint Commercial Operations (JCO)… we were mentioned again as a success story in how to create a joint, multinational community ensuring the safety of space! The recent Prague Space Security Conference highlighted the exceptional progress made in transatlantic cooperation. One standout example is the realigned and renamed Joint Commercial Operations (JCO) cell at US Space Command. This initiative, praised by European space leaders exemplifies successful joint operations, seamlessly integrating commercial, civilian and military partners to enhance space domain awareness. Maj. Gen. Michael Traut, head of German Space Command, emphasized, "The JCO run by Barbara Golf and her team is a great success story, allowing many partners to contribute valuable space domain awareness information." Lt. Gen. Tommy James, deputy head of SPACECOM, added, "The JCO is a huge example of success in the military for both innovation and commercial integration." The JCO's efforts go beyond theory. For instance, in October 2023, commercial partners alerted SPACECOM about the Russian Cosmos 2570 satellite's complex structure, showcasing the JCO's vital role in real-time space surveillance. As Lt. Gen. James stated, "Space is absolutely a team sport and we are stronger together." In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the UK’s focus on enhancing its space capabilities is more crucial than ever. Insights from our senior executives during the Farnborough International Airshow 2024 shed light on this important development. Robert Lightfoot and Nik Smith emphasised the need for resilience in space infrastructure. This resilience ensures that both military and civilian services remain uninterrupted, safeguarding critical operations on Earth. The advancements in space technology not only bolster national defence but also enhance civilian applications, highlighting the interconnectedness of these domains. As the UK strengthens its position in space, it sets a precedent for other nations to follow. #ResillienceinSpace

#Space is #global, but its #strategic dimension is raising competition between new geopolitical blocs : « For decades the US has wanted to intermix US and allied space capabilities--via hosted payloads, shared satellite consortia (as is done for NATO C-17's at PAPA airbase), improve interoperability, jointly develop and buy systems. » Nevertheless, history has demonstrated that allies are much stronger together when they share targets with #interoperable but #independant and #autonomous systems. This is the policy that #Europe and US should build together.

I have a new piece out today on the potential of ALLIED DEFENSE SPACE SALES with Natalie Sturza and @Ashton Walter -- Congrats to both of them on their first piece for American Foreign Policy Council. Apparently "The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command (SSC) saw a 500% increase in foreign military sales (FMS) requests between 2023 and 2024" and Deanna Ryals tells us why: "As nations have started to prioritize space as a national need or a national capability that they want to invest in, many nations do not have their own industrial base for space yet" Hopefully, this will stimulate thinking about potential space defense sales, and the many routes it could take (FMS, EDA, DCS)--and how easy it might be to get allies into a Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). For decades the US has wanted to intermix US and allied space capabilities--via hosted payloads, shared satellite consortia (as is done for NATO C-17's at PAPA airbase), improve interoperability, jointly develop and buy systems. The PWSA offers many potential opportunities. 🚀Exciting developments in the Department of Defense's space strategy! 🚀 The DoD is embracing a new approach that aims to integrate commercial efforts with military space operations. This shift recognizes the growing importance of space as a strategic domain and the need to leverage innovative technologies from the private sector. Key points of the new strategy: • Closer collaboration between DoD and commercial space companies • Focus on maintaining the U.S. edge in space capabilities • Accelerating the fielding of space systems and services for warfighters As we enter a new era of space exploration and utilization, it's crucial to adapt our approach. The DoD is restructuring and retooling its forces to meet the challenges of new warfighting domains and evolving competitors. What are your thoughts on this integration of military and commercial space efforts? How do you think it will impact the future of space operations and national security? #SpaceStrategy #DefenseTechnology #CommercialSpace

It is great to see the U.S. Space Forces – Space (S4S) Brig. General Anthony J. Mastalir reiterating the importance of working with regional allied nations such as #Japan and #SouthKorea to maintain the #rulesbasedinternationalorder. We celebrate the continued emphasis on the need for allied collaboration in #defense operations and #defenseindustry across all #domains, #air #cyber, #land, #maritime, and #space. Working with our partners to support and strengthen these relationships is our (Armatus.ai) very reason for being. We hope that the #USgovernment and #USDOD will continue to promote the critical need to work with allied nations both regionally and globally into 2025 and beyond. https://lnkd.in/dK5rxbRk Mica Imamura, Frank Clark, Jeremy Knopp, Guy Boekenstein, Masahiko Kuwabara, Kristian Ryan, Erika Maekawa, Ian Kitajima, Keith Matsumoto, Pacific International Center For High Technology Research - PICHTR IndoPaCT

The US Space Force Chief of Space Operations, Gen Chance Saltzman, along with the military space chiefs of 18 allied nations, met in Colorado Springs and have issued a joint statement on space cooperation. The joint military statement lays the groundwork for two interrelated processes to proceed over the coming years. 1. The creation of a Star Trek future where allied Earth militaries develop a combined space operations force (aka Starfleet); and 2. the stealth unveiling of a US Navy-run multinational secret space program called Solar Warden that will be rolled out as something newly created, as opposed to being decades-old and first deployed in the late 1970s: https://lnkd.in/ePfkqmKu

Overclassification of military space activities has been a source of frustration for U.S. military allies and industry partners for years. A policy directive enacted late last year by the Deputy Secretary of Defense supports efforts to eliminate legacy classification barriers and decrease the siloed nature of space activities. This #ConstellationsArticle takes insight from industry experts like Col. Jean-Baptiste Paing of the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy Dr. John Plumb, and two commercial space domain awareness (SDA) providers.
