From Bali to Mt Fuji to Jeju, the return of high-volume tourism in Asia Pacific is being accompanied by a slew of negative headlines. National and local governments are seeking regulatory solutions to the downsides of tourism growth - but can they work, and are they being accurately targeted? I enjoyed joining Andrea Azureene Heng and Hairianto Diman on CNA938 in Singapore to discuss over-tourism, tourism taxes and fees, and the drivers of anti-social tourist behaviour. We referenced these issues within a dynamic, post-pandemic context of increased travel activity throughout Asia Pacific, and governments chasing arrivals numbers to boost economic recovery. This figure for Southeast Asia is over 60%. 2️⃣ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒔𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕: Asia is considered the world's largest international tourist spending market today and is forecast to soon become the largest global international tourism market in terms of scale. The rapid growth of the middle class in Asian countries is seen as one of the main drivers of growth for this market in the coming period, especially in the markets of India, China, Korea and Southeast Asia. This is both an opportunity and a challenge for destinations in the region. 3️⃣ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒍: Global international tourists are undergoing a strong shift in their choice of trip form from packaged tours to self-organized or partially self-organized tourism.
