How Poor Reliability Engineering is Undermining South Africa’s Mining Industry ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In South Africa’s mining sector, poor implementation of reliability engineering practices has become a significant barrier to efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Reliability engineering, which focuses on ensuring equipment and systems perform consistently, is crucial in mining, where operations rely on costly and complex machinery. Unfortunately, many mines in South Africa operate with outdated equipment and infrastructure, and lack of maintenance standards often forces operators into reactive maintenance instead of proactive strategies. This reactive approach leads to frequent breakdowns, increased downtime, and escalating costs, which severely hinder productivity. The sector also struggles with a shortage of skilled reliability engineers and an inadequate investment in technology to support modern maintenance practices. Without predictive tools and analytics, operators can only address issues post-failure, making it difficult to prevent costly disruptions and accidents. The skills gap further compounds this issue, as many mines lack trained professionals who can implement effective reliability practices or manage newer technologies, thus perpetuating reliance on outdated, ineffective methods. Addressing these challenges requires a shift toward preventive and predictive maintenance models, as well as investment in both workforce training and digital solutions like condition monitoring and asset management systems. By equipping South African mines with the right expertise and tools, the industry could improve safety, reduce operational costs, and extend equipment life, fostering a more sustainable and competitive mining sector that can better withstand economic and environmental pressures.

The shift change and quality of handovers often reflect the state of equipment maintenance, the conditions and the adherence to the plan on a mine site. Improperly communicated information during a handover can quickly affect the key actions to start the shift on time like: equipment reliability, putting the security of personnel on the line during the following shifts. Operators may not always receive sufficient training on conducting effective shift changes. This gap can lead to misunderstandings about what information needs to be communicated and how it should be documented, further complicating the process.
