Do these words sound familiar? “Will you just go and lie down!” Does your fur-baby rarely settle, barking at random noises and following your every move? We are so used to seeing this kind of behaviour that we think it’s ‘normal’, but it’s not!! Now whilst it’s true that some breeds need more stimulation than others, you might be surprised to hear that a contented dog, will do nothing more than sleep and relax for most of their waking day! And this so called ‘normal’ behaviour, is due to our dogs being on ‘High Alert’, which is a stressful state for any living being to maintain, and not one that is conducive to your dog’s wellbeing. Image being in a constant state of high alert; you would be exhausted, and over time, your health would suffer. When we bring a dog into our home, we need to be clear on the rules and boundaries, otherwise the dog will presume it knows best, and will attempt to take over. This is when our dog starts to display those unwanted behaviours that we find annoying, but believe me when I say, your dog is not giving you a hard time, your dog is having a hard time. Ooh what are yours? Mine are: Fluffy clouds The sound of rain The smell of rain Chocolate! People often come to me and talk about their triggers, what is difficult, how it affects them. All of these are super important and definitely something that I try hard to help people with. But it's easy to get caught in the trap of focussing on what's not good, so it's such a lovely feeling to highlight these wellbeing moments that help a person to feel calm and safe. Identifying what helps a person to feel calm and safe, can be useful in putting a plan together to aid restoration of energy/ equilibrium after a triggering event.
Glimmers, the opposite of triggers! These are just some examples of the kind of moments that can give us feelings of calm and safety. Finding our own glimmers can really support our wellbeing 💜 #AutisticGlimmers #AutismUnderstanding

Did you know that today is #TakeYourDogToWorkDay? We all know that the proximity of animals help us with our mental and emotional wellbeing, don't we? And did you know that having your dog at your workplace can help alleviate #stress too? The Kennel Club conducted a survey which revealed that "70% of people think dogs reduce stress within a working environment". I also said that you can reduce your blood pressure just by stroking a dog... 😃 I am so lucky to have my little Peky with me in the office every day. She doesn't only help me to feel good, but also helps my clients. She is fabulous at putting a smile on my clients' faces, even through the screen! And my in-person clients just LOVE having her around. She is not officially a 'therapy dog' as such. But she has a unique sense of when you need some stress or tention released. This is when she jumps up on the sofa, sitting next to you. And as soon as that tension subsides, she is off, as her job is done... Even just stroking her soft furry calms you right down... 😊🐶 Have you ever taken your dog with you to work?
