SAFmaps’ Post

Check out the special report published by Estadão featuring the developers of SAFmaps. In the interview, experts emphasize that Brazil has great potential for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) thanks to its diversity of raw materials and favorable climatic conditions. Plants such as palm oil, macaw oil, sugarcane, eucalyptus, soy, corn, and agave can be grown in the country to produce SAF, which is made from vegetable or animal oils and offers significant reductions in carbon emissions compared to traditional aviation kerosene. SAF production in Brazil is currently limited to laboratories, but global demand is high. SAF is considered critical to the decarbonization of the aviation sector, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicting it will account for 65% of the sector's carbon emission reductions by 2050. SAFmaps identifies the best feedstocks for SAF production in Brazil. The results highlight the productivity of macaw oil, which contains 45% oil in its fruit, compared to 15% in soybeans. The study also shows that Brazil can use residues such as sugarcane bagasse, wood, beef tallow, and used cooking oil for SAF production. Companies such as Raízen are investing in SAF production and exporting ethanol to Europe, where it is converted into SAF. Raízen also plans to build new second-generation ethanol plants that use sugarcane straw and bagasse, avoiding competition with food production. Brazil is uniquely positioned to excel in SAF production due to its abundance of raw materials and vast areas of degraded pastureland that can be used for expansion. Experts believe the country can become a leader in the clean fuels sector and play a decisive role in the global SAF market. See the link for more details: https://lnkd.in/dWUDkxH8
