The Forsvarsmateriell - Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency exercised a contract option to procure three additional TPY-4 radars from Lockheed Martin, bringing the new total to 11 of the ground-based multi-mission radars. The TPY-4, which has been coined “NATO’s eyes in the north”, also recently completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) confirming the radar design is meeting the program requirements. The TPY-4 radar system, a state-of-the-art multi-mission sensor, enhances the Forsvaret - Norwegian Armed Forces’s capability to detect, track, and classify aerial threats, providing critical situational awareness. “Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 radars are crucial components of Norway’s defence and are the most suitable choice for supporting all-domain deterrence in the Nordic region,” said Chandra Marshall, Vice President Radar & Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin. “The additional order and the completion of the CDR mark major steps forward, confirming that our radar meets the stringent requirements of NDMA and ensuring the security and sovereignty of Norway.” The relationship with Norwegian industry has been a critical element to the development of TPY-4. Lockheed Martin leveraged an extensive Norwegian supplier base making this program and other active international opportunities for TPY-4 a true U.S./Norwegian industry partnership. In particular, the relationship with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) resulted in the production of the first TPY-4 which included the Platform Electronics System (PES) built by KDA. The latest milestone in the #PEGASUS program - a collaboration between HENSOLDT, Lufthansa Technik Defense, and Bombardier Defense - sees the modified Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft, designed for the Bundeswehr (German Federal Armed Forces)’ Persistent German Airborne Surveillance System (PEGASUS), successfully complete its first flight at Bombardier’s Wichita Flight Test Center! With the integration of the advanced Kalætron Integral SIGINT system, PEGASUS is set to redefine airborne surveillance for the German Bundeswehr. The aircraft now enters the crucial flight testing phase before heading to Hamburg for further systems integration and certification by Lufthansa Technik Defense. “Germany’s next-generation signal intelligence aircraft is flying high. ❓ The Air Force has changed in terms of aircraft and their capabilities. It is increasingly working towards the role of a multi-role aircraft. But is this concept still up to date? ❗ The avionics of an aircraft have different capabilities/possibilities in their design. If I have a larger surface area to generate more lift, the maximum speed suffers as a result. Conversely, a more compact avionics layout makes it possible to generate higher speeds. In my opinion, capabilities should not be dependent on the maximum performance of the carrier system, nor should this set the limits. The reverse should be the case. A capability that is to be used comes first, and the carrier platform should be designed accordingly. ⁉️ The financial aspect is clearly evident in the multi-role concept, but nowadays we see that the focus should be on a high-performance solution as opposed to a more cost-efficient one. In the area of the F35, the Bundeswehr has again focused on a multi-role variant. In the Chinese armed forces, the J-20 Shengdu has been designed as a bomber/director for its exact purpose. ❓ Should there be a rethink here or is it still possible to maintain the quality of all capabilities despite the physical limitations of a multi-role concept? #airforce #militaryaviation #concepts #F35 #J20 #multirole #innovation

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Investment (MISA), the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) and global industrial giant Leonardo have signed an MoU. The MoU is intended to encourage the discussion, development and evaluation of a range of investment and collaboration opportunities in the defence and aerospace sector. The sectors covered include rotorcraft, electronics and sensors, combat air and cross-domain integration, uncrewed systems, digital technologies, MRO services and space. There was also a heavy focus on industrialisation -– specifically including the localisation of electronic warfare systems and radar production, as well as helicopter final assembly. Observers say the inclusion of combat air and cross-domain integration is interesting as it demonstrates Leonardo’s willingness to collaborate on the highest-value next-generation technology initiatives and enabling demonstration projects. These could include integrated sensors, uncrewed systems and digital technologies. 🤝 Teaming agreement for new platform situational awareness tool Together with BAE Systems, Inc., we have entered into a teaming agreement to bring the Integrated Combat Solution (ICS) to the U.S. defence market. The agreement was signed during this year’s #AUSA in Washington, DC. The transformational battlefield situational awareness tool for combat vehicles will provide the Warfighter with the capability to link and share video streams, metadata, target information, slew-to-cue commands, and much more, reducing the typical threat response speed from minutes to seconds. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace will develop the ICS tool, while BAE Systems will integrate it onto combat vehicles. Together, the companies will support ongoing technology upgrades throughout the product lifecycle. “Together we will deliver ICS as a core enabler of modern warfare, providing all-domain visibility, command and control,” said Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Executive Vice President Defence Systems, Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace. “This force multiplier streamlines complicated threat responses, networking mobility platforms and other assets for increased combat capability. #ICS #DefenceIndustry #Collaboration
