🎧 Exciting news! Saga Egmont brings Tove Jansson's literary gems to life in an enriching collection of star-studded audiobooks. Remarkable narrator performances and revered literary works wed in Saga Egmont’s series of audiobooks, honoring the legacy of Tove Jansson, the beloved Finnish author, artist, and creator of the Moomins. Our line-up for the project doesn’t end there: Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Winkleman, Sara Kestelman, Indira Varma, Louise Brealey, and Sandi Toksvig join our stellar cast to bring Jansson’s tales to life. For several reasons, this is the first year I read more books via #audiobook than physical (I think — I don't keep a tracker). It has been over 2 years since I wrote this #blog post, but I am still seeing the argument play out online over whether audiobook "counts" as #reading. Spoilers: it does. [Alt. 📚 Stephen King: A Champion of Audiobooks 🎧 "But man, when these things are good, they are really good". Although audiobooks of his books are not in the Spiracle Collection we admire Stephen King for his towering ability in writing horror. He's a master of the pulse race and we also salute him for his love of literary writing too. In 2007 he wrote an article in which he shared his love for audiobooks - he was an early adopter. It makes for good reading today as his delight in what the actor can do to a story is contagious. "If ever there was an argument for audio as the perfect medium when it comes to novels and stories, it’s Ron Silver’s reading of the Pulitzer-winning American Pastoral. (That’s why it ranks No. 1 on my top 10 all-time list, below...) This is what happens when a prodigiously talented, fully invested reader really ”gets” sublimely written material. Silver delivers ”Swede” Levov’s story with a passion and a tenderness that only the spoken word can convey. Listening to something like that, anyone might overshoot their exit." 👉 Check out King’s article from 2007 to see his favourites: https://lnkd.in/eD-dPv_5 #Audiobooks #StephenKing #Storytelling #Literature #Innovation #Spiracle

💡Audiobook Tip of the Week: Scam Warning Signs! 🚨🚨🚨🚩🚩🚩 When auditioning for audiobook projects on ACX (Audible Creative Exchange) BEWARE of scam projects. 👀 Somehow, someway projects can be posted on here, seemingly, without any sort of fact checking or validation of the RH (Rights Holder) project. 😮💨 Here's some quick tips to help sort out if the project is legit or not. 👍 🤗 1️⃣ Review the cover art of the book. Is there one? Does it look professional or more Amateurish? 🤔 In this case, it is ok to partially judge the book by its cover. If the cover art is making you cringe, you might wanna look elsewhere. 😵💫 2️⃣ Click the link to the Amazon listing of the title. Is there a "Read Sample" or "Look Inside" feature on the Kindle version? This gives you a glimpse of the writing style and what you're potentially getting into. This quick check can help evaluate whether it's a talented writer....or maybe just some slapped together chat gpt or AI nonsense full of typos. 🤖🙅♂️ 3️⃣ Research the author and see if they have additional titles they've written. Check out their average review scores and read some customer verified reviews.....not just "Loved it, would recommend." If the book is Royalty Share or Royalty Share Plus, there NEEDS to be some encouraging reviews to persuade you on spending time on a book that will pay dividends later. 💡 4️⃣ Check out the book on a reputable website like Good Reads. What's the score on there and how are the reviews? If there's no activity, this could be a red flag. Best of luck, it's a jungle out there. Be wise in your pursuits. 🧘 #voiceacting #audioproduction #audiobooks #narrator #narration ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi I'm Tim. Writing for multiple publications (including the quarterly Audio column for SLJ), judging Audies for almost a decade, and running thousands of miles (former ultramarathoner), I’ve listened to—rough lifetime estimate—some 4,000 titles and reviewed maybe 2,000-ish. My obsession is well fed: according to the Audio Publisher Association’s (APA) latest 2024 sales survey, “publishers’ audiobook revenue grew 9 percent in 2023 to $2 billion, continuing the trend of year-on-year growth.” An earlier APA survey showed kids’ audiobooks had the fastest growth by category, a 44 percent uptick in 2022. Getting kids hooked on audiobooks starts with great narrators. Do I have opinions about who’s great and who is soooo not? YEP! Terry Hong helps discern the "Audiobook Wow Factor" in SLJ's cover package on audiobooks for kids and teens. #audiobooks

This is more disturbing than many are letting on: According to a new survey by BookNet Canada, 58% of audiobook listeners obtained their books from free sources, such as the library or YouTube, marking the first time that readers across all formats were more likely to acquire books for free than through paid channels. The trend extended to other formats as well, with 62% of e-book readers and 51% of print book readers finding free sources for their reading material. For those who are wrapping up their summer road trip plans, if you’re still looking for the ideal audiobook to check out to keep yourself and passengers (really, of all ages, more or less!) entertained, check out our SPRINGFIELD CONFIDENTIAL (Harper Collins, 2018). It’s read by Mike Reiss, co-author and subject of the book that makes for the ONLY insider longform story of the longest-running (non-soap opera!) scripted series in television history, the one and only THE SIMPSONS. The stories are fun, funny, fascinating and even at times inspirational. And Mike’s voice is a perfect complement to what we’re laying out in the book. In fact, truth be told, as great as the photos are in the hardcover and paperback editions, I tend to recommend the audiobook just so folks can hear Mike’s inimitable voice tell it all exactly like it was and is when it comes to not only THE SIMPSONS, but the many other iconic projects he’s worked on over the years, including co-creating 90s cult classic THE CRITIC, naming the Minions from DESPICABLE ME and writing for the Oscars along with everyone from Johnny Carson, Joan Rivers and Garry Shandling … to ALF and The Pope (true story!). At seven hours long, it’s the perfect length for any long car ride (yes, even with the kids — again, you’ll see when you hear Mike’s voice and dynamite standup-comic delivery) and will keep you saying, BEST EPISODE EVER. Find it wherever you get your audiobook content. Enjoy! #simpsons #audiobook #audio #biography #autobiography #television #animation #cartoons #roadtrip #books #writer #publishing #author

Two years ago, in April 2022, we launched Spiracle. It wasn’t a champagne-smashing-on-the-bow kind of launch, but a Beta launch. The hull floated and we knew that refinement, enhancement, and even radical changes would be made at sea. Indeed they were, they are, and they will continue to be! Core to our work then, and to this day, is the publishing of new audiobooks in partnership with leading, independent publishers in the UK. We understand that many great books do not make it to the audiobook form because it’s expensive and time-consuming for many of the best publishers. Unique, memorable books take time to consider, and yet, the speed that most online marketplaces demand, makes the attention required difficult. Addressing this challenge propels us forward. Spiracle Editions are audiobooks you will not find anywhere else. They have been carefully selected from reading, rereading, and deciding their suitability for audio form. Will they make a captivating listen? They have also been chosen because they represent a variety of writing and writers. They bring voices of the world to bear, so that, alongside writing in English, there is wonderfully translated writing too. To date, we’ve co-published 26 Spiracle Editions, each deserving of recognition. But the one we’re spotlighting on this occasion is The Birthday Party, one of our bestsellers. As Leigh Wilson wrote, “What is so powerful about The Birthday Party by Laurent Mauvignier, co-published with Fitzcarraldo Editions, is that it unusually gives us at the same time what one French reviewer has called ‘empathy and dread’ – the pleasures together of the psychological novel and the crime novel”. Its translator Daniel Levin Becker is also impressive, and its narrator is the gifted Lydia Leonard, making it, as one Spiracle customer wrote, “the perfect entrée to Spiracle”! It's available with a 20% discount this week. Also included in this month’s Current Highlights are the first Spiracle Editions ever - The Squire by Enid Bagnold, co-published with Persephone Books and beautifully read by Juliet Aubrey. It is a magnificent novel about womanhood, age, childbirth, and more. It remains indelibly and with glimmering, evening shadows, in the memory. Our non-fiction Spiracle Edition this month is Stephen Johnson’s How Shostakovich Changed My Mind. Read by the author, it is a moving account of his bipolar disorder and how he came to understand his mental health through the music of the Russian composer. Published by Notting Hill Editions, it makes the hair roots fizz. There is a richness to be had with audiobooks drawn from a diverse range of publishers, with threads covering thriller writing, France, language, and memory. All without, we hope, the paralysis of overwhelming choice. My best wishes, Kate Kate Bland, Director https://lnkd.in/evP4Er7v #audiobooks #publishing #literature #writing #discovery #curation #startups
