Journal of the Nauruan Diplomat Reference #: ND001 Entry date: Saturday, 5 October 2024 I've been reading posts from experienced diplomats, learning about their challenges, the rewards from the job, their lifestyles, and just tips on being a diplomat. It got me thinking - has anyone from the Pacific, particularly Nauru, shared their experience on social media? I think it would be fascinating to see how a small island developing state carries out its work, considering our limited resources. Then it hit me - why not document my own experience? To introduce myself, I'm Josie-Ann Dongobir, the First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Nauru to the United Nations in New York. I'm married with four children and also a part-time student at the University of the South Pacific (USP). I've been with the Foreign Ministry since 2010 and have thoroughly enjoyed my work. So how did I end up in the Foreign Ministry? Well, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study at university. In high school, I was torn between becoming a physiotherapist or pursuing a business career. However, I ended up applying for the Assistant Director position at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, just because the advertisement was out and I needed a job, and fortunately, I got the job. This role has taught me about the government's priorities and the significance of advocating for Nauru's interests abroad. I have a passion for learning about new cultures and meeting new people, so this job feels like the perfect fit for me. As I continued to learn and experience new things, it became an honourable job. I felt a deep sense of patriotism, especially knowing that what I'm doing is for the benefit of the Nauruan people and our children. It was definitely worth giving 100% to this job. I felt like I can make a difference. Throughout my journal, I'll share what I've learned, the challenges I've faced, and the rewarding outcomes of being a foreign affairs official for Nauru. 📷 Photo was taken during my first year in Foreign Affairs. #NauruanDiplomaticJournal

Albania is Progressing...
I was glad to kick off my Western Balkans tour with today’s visit to Albania. The country has made a great job on its Reform Agenda under the Growth Plan, and it is making great strides towards the EU. Albania will benefit from €920 million in additional EU investments, with the first payment by the end of the year. I was also happy to spend time with students at the College of Europe in Tirana and deliver a keynote speech for the start of the new academic year. Looking forward to meeting Albanian President Begaj tomorrow and continuing my tour in North Macedonia.

Australia and Japan have poured tens of millions of dollars annually into study abroad initiatives, but only one of these countries has focused on producing multilingual citizens. Spoiler: it’s not Australia. With recent changes to funding available for Australian students to study abroad, which now emphasise language learning, I put down some of my thoughts in this article: https://lnkd.in/gT7PKkb9 Although the underlying dynamics are more complex than this, it was written for a general audience to highlight just how much we're missing out by not prioritizing multilingualism in Australia.

🌍Why did I meet with my ambassador? I had the honor to meet with Congo's Ambassador to Japan, where we discussed the importance of diplomatic ties in encouraging cross-cultural partnerships. Our conversation touched on the relevance of diplomatic members from one's study country and their role in forging international connections. As a Congolese student studying in Japan, I have seen the critical role diplomatic representatives have in bridging cultural gaps and encouraging mutual understanding. Their presence not only facilitates academic and professional prospects but also provides a source of encouragement for the diaspora looking to maintain ties with their home country. During the exchange, I expressed my vision for establishing a Congolese association ( for both Congo) in Japan to promote cultural interchange, enhance community involvement, and advocate for the concerns of Congolese living in the country. The Ambassador's views and support drove my drive to make this vision a reality, using diplomatic channels to promote and secure the association's success. Indeed, the presence of diplomatic personnel from one's study nation serves as a foundation for bridging borders, facilitating collaboration, and instilling a sense of belonging in expat communities. This can be one of the most valuable resources to explore while studying abroad to expand your network. #Diplomacy #leadership #GlobalCitizenship #CommunityEngagement #Congo #Japan

In an unprecedented historical moment, I am filled with pride and honor as I present to you my book, “Trade and Culture: A Sea of Valuable Opportunities Between Brazil and Saudi Arabia”, an academic work and a personal contribution from my role as President of the Brazilian-Saudi Chamber of Commerce in Brazil. It has been my immense pleasure to be able to craft this work, which sheds light on the deep and promising ties between these two great economic powers. This book goes beyond merely documenting the bilateral relations between Brazil and Saudi Arabia; it delves into a comprehensive academic analysis of various fields, including economics, culture, investment, and sports. It stands as a cornerstone for future studies in this field and opens doors to academic research and studies in both Saudi and Brazilian universities. I take special pride in addressing in this book the remarkable growth in strategic relations between Saudi Arabia and Spanish-speaking countries of South America, such as Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, and Chile. This work reflects the Kingdom’s growing role in fostering international cooperation with these nations, enhancing its position as a key player in the Latin American continent. As President of the Brazilian-Saudi Chamber of Commerce, this work reflects the culmination of my extensive experience in trade and international cooperation. It serves as an essential reference for anyone looking to explore the vast opportunities offered by the relationship between Brazil and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it is a crucial tool for understanding the business dynamics in both countries, highlighting the enormous potential that can be realized through this strategic partnership. In light of Saudi Vision 2030, which is reshaping the future of the Kingdom as a rising power regionally and globally, this book offers a comprehensive framework for understanding how Brazil can benefit from these profound transformations. It presents Saudi Arabia not only as a major economic force but also as a nation with growing diplomatic influence and impact on the international stage, moving forward with a vision rooted in tolerance, peace, and sustainable development. Finally, the book highlights Brazil’s position as a nation with immense economic and commercial capabilities, striving to strengthen its partnerships with Saudi Arabia by leveraging its strong relationships with South American countries and the world. This book is not just a reference for commercial relations; it is also a cultural bridge that fosters mutual understanding and opens doors to greater and more prosperous cooperation.
