BUSINESS UNIT CHARGING People value what they have to pay for, so retailers should charge business units / stores / branches overtly for their space, and at full price (no subsidies to help poorest branches improve their P&Ls). You'd be surprised at how much more efficiently they use it... Having said that...Whitey Basson apparently threw this principle out the window for some store managers when Shoprite took over OK Bazaars. Apparently some OK stores were paying such high rentals that the store managers would never ever see a bonus, unless their assigned rentals were moderated to something approaching a "market rent". Sometimes "motivation" trumps "best practice".
