This frank interview is full of gems from one of the most genuine and inspiring people I know. Enjoy. ********************************************* Why do you create healthcare content ❓ 💬 "To try and get a publishing deal. Despite having a best-selling breast cancer book, no-one wanted my memoir (Under The Knife). Publishing Houses told me that I only had 2000 followers on Instagram and I only posted content about volunteering at a hedgehog shelter and sewing my own clothes. I was told to come back when I had 10,000 followers. So I started making quick videos, 3-5 a week, and replying to every comment I got. I read a load of books and worked my arse off and got to 12,000 followers in 6 months. Sadly they still didn’t want it, but I crowdfunded it in 10 days with Unbound through the dedicated community I had built up. I’ve moved onto long-form videos on YouTube as well as the shorts and have really enjoyed the creative process. Researching, scripting, learning about editing, captioning, hooks and how to give my community what they want. Plus it stops me getting bored at home since I had to retire as a breast surgeon in 2019 when my breast cancer came back." What is one bit of advice you’d give to an aspiring creator ❓ 💬 "Give your community what they want to watch, not what you want to show them. I use Instagram stories and the replies to comments to come up with content ideas. It’s easy to forget that knowledge I take for granted – medical terms and concepts, is still alien to many people. And stop trying to predict what will go viral. I’ve had 2 videos get over 1M views this year – one on Instagram and one on TikTok. But on all my other channels (Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, YouTube) each video had less than 20k views. None of this makes sense! And be prepared to pay out for decent medical B-Roll. I was shocked at how hard it was to find and how much it costs." What is the main goal for your channel this year ❓ 💬 "I want to focus more on shorts and really pin down three of four different styles that work for me, are entertaining and educational and keep coming back. Basically, have a bit more fun. It’s not about the number of followers for me, it’s about having an engaged community and I’m trying to find a way to schedule time to reply to everyone without it taking over my life."
