🌍 EASE attended Think tank Sport et Citoyenneté - FR’s webinar on European Sporting Heritage. We had the pleasure of attending this insightful event, which explored the cultural and historical significance of sport across Europe. The webinar featured three fascinating presentations: 1️⃣ "The Nautical History of the Netherlands" – a look at how maritime traditions have shaped Dutch identity and sporting culture. 2️⃣ "Rindal Ski Museum" – an inspiring story of Norway’s living heritage in ski-making and winter sports. 3️⃣ "The National Sports Museum in France" – an insightful look at the leading institution in the dissemination of sporting heritage. These discussions offered a powerful reminder of how sport serves as a bridge between history, culture, and communities! #SportingHeritage #EASE #EuropeanSportsModel

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am super excited that Brisbane is hosting the 2032 Summer Olympics, and that our ‘Sunshine State’ Capital will be showcased to the rest of the world. When announced several years ago, the 2032 Olympics felt like a lifetime away, and the decisions on venues and villages had no urgency, but the clock is now rapidly ticking, and sensible, collaborative, and progressive decisions need to be made to ensure that Australia can deliver this world class event, and that the necessary investment in world class facilities and precincts will inject new life and prosperity into our river city post 2032. Close to the airport, train lines, and our iconic ‘Rivercat’ Ferry routes, this new proposition for an iconic Northshore Olympic Precinct could tick all of the boxes, and if it is anywhere near as good as the amazing Perth Optus Stadium precinct on the Swan River, we should all be getting excited. I’ve no doubt that there will be numerous other proposals and discussions over the next 12 months, but two thing are certain… - An Olympic stadium at QSAC (the old Commonwealth Games precinct) adjacent to the cemetery at Upper Mount Gravatt is not a world class solution. - Our political parties must take a bipartisan approach to the solution during this incredibly transformational time in Brisbane’s history. Let’s work together to make #brisbane2032 memorable for all the right reasons! #brisbane #queensland #olympics #australia #brisbetter #stadium #venue #olympicgames https://lnkd.in/gyPpZQBP

The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) has begun discussions in respect of facilitating a grand exercise, the creation of its Strategic Plan. There is much that has been happening around the Caribbean in respect of sport and its impact on successive generations of our people, but we are yet to determine how best to utilise sport to cultivate as a vehicle for national and regional development. Independence came after the abysmal failure of the West Indian Federation. The region fell prey to the long, sustained, and debilitating legacy of colonisation by several European countries with one common objective, the expansion of their respective economies, regardless of the cost of lives and the long-term consequences for the region. One by one, the colonisers cultivated a culture of systemic exploitation of peoples, using an array of strategies to sustain their impact. Sport has been used by our peoples to transform the way we are perceived, from a weak, blighted grouping of transported generations to an immensely talented Caribbean region. But we have somehow failed to allow our sporting talent and all-too-sporadic achievements to mould us closer together, ever mindful of the experiences that brought us together, and fashion for ourselves, on our own terms, what we can and want to be. We are lucky. 😘 Lucky to live in the world's largest multicultural democratic haven – Europe. Composed of imperfect democracies but far more perfect than many other regimes on the planet. What we have just experienced in France during these Olympic Games has shown us how the values that guide us, such as freedom, equality, and fraternity, are also values that sports magnify. Did you know? The 27 countries of the European Union, when we add up their medals, are comfortably ahead in terms of gold medals: 97! (vs. 40 USA and 40 China), silver medals: 95! (vs. 44 USA and 27 China), and the total number of medals won: 309!!! (vs. 126 USA and 91 China). It is easy to understand through this observation that sporting development, and therefore indirectly general well-being, is undoubtedly intimately linked to our multi-democratic situation. As the 2024 Olympics come to an end, while waiting for the 2024 Paris Olympics, several positive feelings dominate my state of mind, but above all, I am aware of my luck. I am so proud to be French, but especially proud to be European. Vive l’Europe. https://lnkd.in/ejUFBj7c

A great fighting spirit matters more than “winning” for control functions Together with the Greek poet Dimitrios Vikelas, the French Pierre de Coubertin worked to revive the Olympics and was appointed first President of the IOC from 1894 to 1896 and held the first renovated Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. At a dinner hosted by the British government on July 24, 1908 in London, during the Olympic Games. Pierre de Coubertin said “ let's remember this strong saying, the important thing in life is not triumph, but the fight, it's not to have won, but to have fought well’”. A phrase that has gone down in history. I always liked that phrase. And I find it meaningful for control functions - internal audit, compliance or risk. Fighting well means fighting the necessary battles - not everything and anything. Fighting well also means respecting rules of engagement, and acting fairly and transparently. It also means courage, and not sweeping under the rug. And in the end it should be your organization that wins, not the control function: they are there to serve. Having said that, congratulations to the French athletes in the 2024 Olympics. They fight well - and they win too! France is second after China when counting gold medals (8 and 9 respectively), and also ranks second after the USA as per the total number of medals (26 and 30). With only 67 millions people compared to much bigger countries, these are good results! In that spirit, kudos to my friends of Britain (6 gold, 17 medals), of Japan (8 and 15) and of Australia (7 and 16), both with a relatively modest population size and yet making it in the top 5! #olympics #internalauditing #compliance #riskmanagement

Compelling perspective on how the Paris 2024 Olympics embody the power of cultural transformation. France's journey from a 1960s sporting crisis to becoming a global sports powerhouse teaches us invaluable lessons about embedding lasting change. Just as France reshaped its national identity through sport, businesses can draw inspiration from this evolution. It reminds us that meaningful cultural change requires vision, persistence, and a commitment to long-term goals. For leaders and managers, embracing these principles can drive profound and enduring transformation within organizations, proving that resilience and strategic focus are key to achieving lasting impact.
2024 Olympics – lessons on culture 🇫🇷 With the opening ceremony of this summer’s Olympic Games just hours away, the sense of anticipation in the French capital is palpable. But as Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, PhD points out, getting the French public to buy into the excitement around the international multi-sport event wasn’t a fait accompli. “French culture is not typically synonymous with sports”. France has worked hard over decades to build a sporting culture into the national fabric. So what can the business world learn from the French experience? The new IMD 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 is out: 𝟭. 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝟮. 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, 𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸. What I find much more interesting in the ranking is that 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 (25) beats 𝑨𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒂 (26) and that 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒂 (27) is more competitive than the 𝑼𝑲 (28). Or that both 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒂 beat 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 (31), 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏 (38) and 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒂 (39). #competitiveness #switzerland #singapore #denmark https://lnkd.in/gcQ7JHUJ

The much-anticipated 60-day review into the Olympic and Paralympic venues undertaken by former Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has been released. From a first review, the direction seems sensible and achievable, making the best use of the available space and transport connections to create a legacy beyond 2032. Here are the key points: ➡️$3bn expected Gabba cost is prohibitive. ➡️A new 55,000-capacity stadium is recommended to be built at Victoria Park. ➡️Brisbane Live to move to a new site within Roma Street Parklands. ➡️The sites at Gabba and Boondall could be repurposed for housing and community/public spaces. The Queensland Government will review the recommendations ASAP to agree on a plan to go forward. What do you think about the new vision for Brisbane 2032? Read more: https://lnkd.in/gFk8SJh5
