For all of us working in justice, the deep-felt tension in our society and suffering in the world affects us and hence the way we see our work and place in the world. I read this quote this morning: “Real justice cannot be perceived until the veil of selfishness has been removed from one’s eyes. The least spark of selfishness will prevent man from being just; he will continue to have a partial interest, because he will be looking after his own interest. Whatever furthers his own interests, he will call his right and his justice.” - bowl of Saki, Inayat Khan. I think this holds true for all human interactions, but particularly so for those of us working with the law. We can choose to facilitate ‘real justice’ through the way we approach our work and the people around us. For me these words serve as an important reminder and an invitation to choose true integrity and be fully present, always. This is something we can do, and must do. A shout out to all those doing the work, to do the work. #justice

𝗦𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲. 𝗜𝗳 𝘀𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲? If sin didn’t exist, justice would evolve from a transactional framework into a universal balance—a system of alignment rather than punishment. Sin, as perceived in many traditions, is a deviation from moral, ethical, or divine laws, creating imbalance. Justice, in response, is often seen as the recalibration of this imbalance. But what if sin, in the conventional sense, were absent? Would justice have purpose? Without sin, justice wouldn’t vanish—it would transform. It would no longer focus on rectifying wrongs but on nurturing harmony. Imagine a world where justice becomes not a sword but a seed, fostering equity, understanding, and collective growth. In such a paradigm, the need for justice emerges from our inherent interdependence rather than transgressions. This perspective invites reflection: Is justice merely reactive to sin, or does it point to something greater—a spiritual equilibrium, a cosmic dance that ensures all threads of existence weave together seamlessly? Perhaps justice, in its highest form, isn’t about wrongs but about belonging.

Lets understand our Lady Justice. Q- Why is lady justice a lady and not a man? A-Justice is symbolized by a woman because she is based on two ancient goddesses of justice. In Greek and Roman mythology, justice was represented by female dieties. As such, it is represented by a woman today. Q- what does different symbols in lady justice signify? Blindfolded- signifies impartiality and objectivity of law and that it doesnot let external factors like politics, wealth or fame influence its decisions. Balance in left hand- represents fairness. Goddess will measure what everyone deserves and how much. (Weighing of evidences). Snake beneath the foot- means that Evil is trampled under her feet until the day that never comes out. Snake represents evil. Sword- symbolises enforcement and respect. A double edged blade signifies that justice can rule against either of the parties once the evidence has been perused. Tabard and arm covers signifies- declaration of war Book- represents the constitution or book of law/ ground rules. If I missed anything kindly let me know in the comment sections.

On this Gandhi Jayanti, let us remember that the greatest weapon in the pursuit of justice is not force, but the unwavering commitment to non-violence and truth. In law, as in life, let peace guide our actions.

GM. If like me, you appreciate intellectual discourse, Then you will like this. Chomsky - Foucault A discussion between the concepts of Power and Justice. To paraphrase Chomsky he says we cannot characterise Justice as merely a system of class oppression. They do to some degree and embody other class of oppression. They also embody true humanely value concepts of Justice and decency and Love and kindness and sympathy and so on. Michel Faoucault disagrees. He says actually, "the concept of human nature, of goodness, of justice , of human essence, of realisation are all notions that have been formed in our civilisation, in our type of knowledge and in our form of philosophy. And as a result they are part of our class system. And we cannot however, regrettable it maybe put these ntions forward to describe or justify a fight that should and shall in principle overthrow the very foundation of our society. This is an extrapolation for which I cannot find historical justification." Who is right? What are your thougts? #Justice #Power #HumanNature #Philosophy #Foucault #Chomsky
