In Yesterday was a scorching day, so I decided to cool off with a tender coconut. At a shop in Calicut, Kerala, I picked one out, but the vendor refused to sell it to me, saying it had too much cream and he needed it for making juice. Even though I was ready to pay whatever he asked, he insisted that my only option was a coconut for water, not cream. As a business owner, he denied my right to choice What lessons he forgot in sales👇🏻 1. Customer Choice, By denying my choice, the vendor ignored the value of satisfying customer preferences. 2. Missed Upselling, Opportunity I was willing to pay extra, but he didn’t leverage the chance to increase the sale value. 3.Customer Loyalty, His rigid approach likely discouraged repeat business, a critical mistake in customer relations. 4. An uneducated 50 yrs old man in Agra taught us the real meaning of sales. A few days ago, along with my friends, I went to see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Even though I have seen the Taj Mahal a number of times, it was the first time I was going with my friends. (You already know the joy of traveling with friends is something else.)😄 For those who have been there, you must know that there are a lot of tourist guides. First, we went to the Taj Mahal, and these guides started asking us for their services, saying, "Sir, guide chahiye???, “Guide lelo, madam”. We said “NO” to around 10-25 guides there. After the Taj, we moved to Agra Fort. Again, these guides started selling their services. Here also, we said “NO” to around 10 guides before entering the Agra Fort. The moment we entered the fort and started exploring the places, a guide came to us and started telling us about the section of the fort we were exploring, even if we didn’t ask for it. The moment he started telling, we got interested in what he was saying. After 2 minutes of explanation, he said that it’ll hardly take a few minutes to visit the complete fort and know everything about it. “Do you want me to guide you?”, he said. We agreed without even giving a second thought. He added value and then pitched his services. He was successful in doing that. Isn’t it similar to your products and services?🤔 If you say, “hey, buy my product/services,” no one is going to buy from you. He first got us interested by sharing some cool facts and stories about the place we were exploring. By the time he mentioned guiding us, we were hooked and eager to learn more. That's the trick, really! Add value, arouse people's curiosity, and then offer your services. That way, you're not just selling; you're building a connection. Wanted to write about Indian mom and their negotiation skills for sometime. During our last trip to Chennai, India, we visited one of the busiest fish market of the country -Kasimedu Fishing harbour. Situated alongside the Bay of Bengal, this bustling market is not only a place to buy fresh seafood but also a school for learning the art of negotiating between buyers and sellers. Walking among the stalls, each displaying their daily catch, we discovered that effective negotiation is more than just agreeing on a price. It involves understanding the product, the market, and building a rapport with the seller. Here are two important lessons we took away from our experience: 🐡 Know Your Product: It's crucial to understand what you're buying. Either learn it or have subject matter expert guide you, like my mom who knows the fish varieties well, which gave us confidence during negotiations. #Product 🦈 Don't Reveal Your Price First: In negotiations, vendors rarely disclose their prices upfront. They often prompt buyers to state their budget or make an offer. The initial silence can be a powerful tool. By letting the other party speak first, and actively listening to their perspective, you can better understand their position. #active #listening For instance, when my mom asked a vendor about the price of fish: Mom: "How much is the fish?" Seller: "You name the price and take it." Mom: "100 rupees per kilogram" (knowing well that the market price is around 500 Rs) Seller: Silence After some time we went back to the same vendor and further negotiation continued .. Seller: "Did you find a better fish and price anywhere else?" Mom: "You sound like my brother; that's why I came back to you. Now, tell me the price..." This back-and-forth continued until my mom and vendor established trust and reached a mutually beneficial deal.
