Indirect heat exchange gas-fired hot air furnaces predominantly rely on convection for heat transfer. In these systems, gas burners ignite to heat a heat exchanger, which then warms the air. I learned a great deal from my heat transfer course last semester and I was able to apply a variety of heat transfer concepts into designing a fin array, detailed below.

In the Preheater feed material is preheated by what appears to be counter-current flow but is, in fact, a series of parallel flow processes in each successive cyclone. Heat transfer in each cyclone stage is completed in less than 1 second.
