James 2:17 emphasizes the importance of active faith: “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Engaging in service opportunities, such as feeding the homeless, supporting local shelters, or participating in mission trips, brings this principle to life. It allows Christians to practice their faith in concrete, meaningful ways. https://gofund.me/cdbfad7c

Today is Memorial Day —a time to honor those who served and sacrificed their lives while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. Weekend trips and barbecues are also arranged to balance out the somberness of the day and welcome the summer. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, and holding family gatherings. Towns and cities across the country host grand Memorial Day parades every year, often featuring senior veterans and military personnel. It's also important to shed light on the reality of veterans who are homeless. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness had increased by 7% between 2022 and 2023. On a single night in January 2023, 98% of veterans experienced homelessness as individuals, and of those individuals, 30% had experienced chronic patterns of homelessness. Veterans are not unlike youth when it comes to homelessness. They must navigate the lack of affordable housing and economic hardship that everyone faces, in addition to the challenges brought on by multiple and extended deployments. Taken together, these factors create a population that deserves–but can often struggle with–housing stability. Homelessness hits people of all ages in any community. Let's use this day of remembrance as a call-to-action for all Americans to remind Congress just how serious this issue has been for all our communities. Let yourself be counted and your voice be heard. Mike Johnston Sir, this is your first post about Veterans since assuming command as Mayor of Denver. While your attention to the issue is appreciated, it regrettably fails to highlight the resilience and greatness of our Veterans, instead focusing on a plight I know all too well. Unsolicited Advice: Scrap the 2024 & 30 day deadlines. Focus on winning hearts and minds in the first six months, not the metrics. Veterans are not a $100 million problem; we are an untapped asset in every community across America. We want to help but understand that making such bold promises will earn you the opposite of respect. ✔ Empathy and understanding must be the cornerstones of your mission. While you're not a Veteran, I believe you can understand us, if you try. Your book proves it. Be the civilian politician we can rally behind - it'll set you apart from the others. I am entrenched in the daily struggles of Colorado's homeless Veterans. If you're committed, you have my full support. There's room for improvement, but no way to worsen the situation. ✔ I have supported your Golden Triangle GNA efforts, and now I ask you to support mine. Save us from more instances of political lip service or the insights of detached academics. We are painfully aware of the challenges; now, action is needed. I'm hopeful you have the solution. When you understand that you cannot save every homeless Veteran - then you'll understand the U.S. Veteran and the depth of mission mindset. It cannot be unprogrammed, homeless or not. ✔ What we require is understanding, a platform to share our stories, and solutions to our challenges. It's that simple. I know all about your Veteran Homeless Program, for I have been through it; it's wanting. Mike - If you're going to get in this fight, then fight. We don't need you, but we can certainly use your character, network, and influence. ~Marche ou Creve Respectfully, Carlos Frank #veteransuicideawareness Let's Chat: jump@parachutegroup.co Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Mt. We're on a mission to make Denver the biggest American city to put an end to unsheltered homelessness for veterans, and we want to do it by the end of 2024. We’re teaming up with community partners to quickly identify veterans living on the streets, and then connect them to housing vouchers or other subsidies. We'll move forward by identifying and resolving any news cases in 30 days.

The need for resource and aid for the LA fires seems daunting. Here's a spreadsheet which includes vetted GoFundMes for families who have lost everything. There are sheets that include displaced Black, Latine, Filipino, disabled families, as well as links to community resources like hotel availability, pro bono therapy, etc. There doesn't seem to be a good way to get everyone's needs met. My suggestion is look at the amount and percentages for families who haven't met 5% of their fundraising goal [suss out what that means: 5% of 15,000 vs. 5% of 120,000]. Links for the below are included at the end of this post: - You can also consider donating to mutual aid organizations in LA. - Or, donate to the California Community Foundation's Wildlife Recovery Fund. - Or, donate to the LA Fire Department Foundation. - Or, donate to the Pasadena Humane Society. - Or, donate to the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Please share widely. #LAFires #LA #LosAngeles #community California Community Foundation's Wildlife Recovery Fund: https://lnkd.in/easDhspr LA Fire Department Foundation: https://lnkd.in/eG_2gsfg Pasadena Humane Society: https://lnkd.in/eJGVcmFA National Day Laborer Organizing Network: https://lnkd.in/ejxyX34W Mutual Aid: https://lnkd.in/ea_UmHdt GoFundMe Directory: https://lnkd.in/ePwx_PQ4

Let's talk about Altadena It is hard to discuss much other than the devastating LA fires. So for the next couple of days, I will post ways to get involved and hopefully spark conversations that may not be prominent in the mainstream discourse. Today let's start with #Altadena. Altadena was a refuge for Black families fleeing the Jim Crow South and during the Civil Rights Movement was one of the few communities offering housing and loans to Black Americans. The Eaton Fire alone has burned more than 1,000 structures and killed at least five people in Altadena. Black homeownership before the fires was 81.5% — nearly double the national rate for Black homeowners. This was hard-earned, a beacon of hope for Black communities across the country, and is devastating to lose. Especially because recovery and rebuilding efforts typically overlook Black and communities of color, who struggle with insurance bureaucracies, federal disaster relief programs, and intersecting forms of oppression. Octavia Butler, buried in Altadena cemetery, wrote in Parable of the Sower of a climate change-driven wildfire occurring on Feb 1st, 2025. Octavia also consistently wrote about adaptability and interdependence. So it is in the spirit of those principles that I share this compilation of GoFundMe links from the Altadena community. Mutual aid is a necessary tool for our collective survival and thrival (ok maybe made that up but I think it works) so let's keep donating until all these entries are green. I did not make this google sheet, please refer to it for more information: https://lnkd.in/eGkMJxx4 I'd love to hear what you think in the comments. What conversations are you having about the LA fires? Through this climate change disaster, what are other ways to support those not typically supported? #LAfires #MutualAid #OctaviaButler -- 🔔 Hi, I'm Tesiah! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗔’𝘀 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 According to the nonprofit news source “The War Horse,” 83 communities and three entire states (Connecticut, Delaware, and Virginia) have "...𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥" veteran homelessness. And from 2010 to 2022, the number of unhoused veterans more than halved. That’s thanks to significant investment from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has adopted the Housing First model of tackling homelessness and ramping up its support programs. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘝𝘈 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴,” said Sam Tsemberis, founder of the Pathways Housing First Institute, the organization that created the model.

On this Veterans Day, if I had one wish, it would be for us to stop funding failed homelessness policies like the ones in this recent article. As Marines, we know the difference between a plan designed to ‘not lose’ and one designed to WIN. California’s ‘Housing First’ approach isn’t a solution—it’s a containment strategy that promotes dependency instead of empowerment. It’s a plan built to avoid failure, not to succeed. And it’s killing us. Yet nonprofits and politicians continue to champion it. Why? Because the tens of billions of dollars poured into these efforts have made failure profitable. We owe it to our veterans and every American to push for real, effective solutions. https://lnkd.in/gNSMheMT

Every #MemberMonday, we shine a light on organizations making impactful strides in the anti-slavery movement. Today, we're proud to illuminate the remarkable journey of our partners, The Salvation Army UK and Ireland Territory. As we delved into the survivor stories shared on their website, we were struck by the many guises used by traffickers to ensnare, exploit, and enslave individuals. Each story serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by victims of modern slavery. Yet, amidst the darkness, we also witness the unwavering strength, courage, and resilience of survivors who refused to be defined by their past. From homelessness and coercion to safety and empowerment, The Salvation Army's commitment to providing comprehensive support shines brightly. Their safe houses, specialist support workers, and tailored programs offer a lifeline to survivors, guiding them towards healing, recovery, and a brighter future. Through such accounts, we extract three key takeaways: 🔵The insidious tactics of traffickers 🔵The indomitable spirit of survivors 🔵The vital importance of organisations in the fight against modern slavery Join us in championing the incredible work of The Salvation Army UK and Ireland Territory, standing in solidarity with survivors of modern slavery. Together, we can turn stories of despair into beacons of hope. #knowmorein24 #thesalvationarmy #theantislaverycollective
