Abstract Although national self-determination emerged as an international legal norm with the formation of the United Nations (UN) in 1945, its implementation continued to be resisted by European colonial powers for decades after. This raises the following question: how was European colonial rule challenged at the UN? This article contends that existing accounts of decolonization have not fully theorized the processes through which colonialism was contested at the UN. It fills this gap by demonstrating the critical role of argumentation, narrativization and discursive struggles through deploying the crucial “Question of Algeria” that was debated between 1955 and 1961. It demonstrates that the Algerian question yielded two opposing discourses—an anticolonial internationalist discourse and a metrocentric civilizational discourse—with both drawing on distinct ideas about human rights and development. The analysis explains the eventual triumph of the former as states increasingly rallied behind the Algerian cause.

Okoli, P. C. (2023). DECOLONIALITY: THE PATH TO AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT. NJIKO: A Multi-Disciplinary Journal of Humanities, Law, Education, and Social Sciences, 1(1). Abstract: When Kwame Nkrumah told his compatriots in the nationalist anticolonial struggle to 'seek first the political kingdom and all else shall be added unto them', he was convinced that dismantling colonial political structures would rid the continent of exploitation and usher in the desired freedom and development. Six decades into political independence, almost all African countries are still suffering from the influence of colonization. Thus, contrary to the assumption of anti-colonial nationalists, what Africa needs is not just colonization but also coloniality, that is, dealing with the gamut of colonial metaphysical processes and epistemic projects that have imprisoned the minds of the people and held the continent down from self-actualization. This has led to renewed calls for the decolonization of a decolonized Africa. While the majority of African scholars agree that there is a need for decoloniality in Africa the bone of contention is how to go about it. Some have called for a wholesale return to African traditional ways of life while others insist that Africa can only develop by fully adopting and implementing the principles of Westernization. Using the documentary and content analysis methods this study explores the best approach to resolving the problem of African coloniality. It argues that returning to the African past or a wholesale adoption of the values of Westernization will not bring about the prerequisite freedom and self-actualization that Africa seeks. The study therefore, recommended a psycho-epistemological theory or methodological democracy that frees the African mind from colonial pinfall and allows him to approach problems that arise with an open mind and resolve them objectively as the most effective way of freeing Africans from the inferiority complex. Keywords: colonization, colonialism, decolonization, knowledge, Africa, West, Afrocentricism, Eurocentricism.

Typhoon no. 8 🌀 in Macau, but no great trouble. I was honoured to share my work on conference interpreting services of the European Commission 🏤 with a highly engaged Brazilian 👨🏫 audience! I got brilliant ideas for my on-going research on multisensorial politics. International Political Sociology is fun! Rede IPS Brasil deserves a big round of applause 👏 for promoting innovative methods in International Relations. 📣 Call for Papers – Deadline 15 December Attending #ECAS and looking for the right panel to submit your paper? 🤝Lena R. and I invite you to take part in our panel: The Politics of Remembrance Among Post-Conflict Generations in Africa This panel explores how memories of violence are inherited, reconstructed, and mobilized by younger generations in African contexts. The focus is on the political implications and uses of these memories, which have remained underexplored in scholarship that has focused on processes of intergenerational transmission, collective trauma, and socio-emotional healing. In some cases, younger generations show little political engagement with violent pasts —whether distant or recent— or cast them actively aside. In others, however, they reanimate them to make political claims about identity, citizenship, and belonging in the present. This raises critical questions about the specific conditions that influence memory politics amongst post-conflict and post-violence generations. To interrogate these issues, this panel invites contributions from across social sciences disciplines to critically examine the socio-political dimensions of remembrance of the recent or more distant violent past amongst post-conflict generations (in a broad sense) in Africa and the African diaspora. 👉https://lnkd.in/ejskve4S

Twenty years ago today, Hungary joined the EU. I remember that there was a May Day fair in the old town of Székesfehérvár and in the evening there were fireworks. While there's no official celebration today, I believe it's crucial to reflect. That is why I'm really proud that I could contribute to a new book examining Hungary's two decades in the EU. The book provides a detailed overview of the EU's impact on various sectors and policy areas. Within the two chapters I wrote with András Bíró-Nagy, we examined the public perceptions of EU policies and the origins of #Euroscepticism. I also recommend our recent publication on the topic in the Sociology Compass: https://lnkd.in/d44f4Kka I truly hope that in the next 20 years, we will better utilize the historical opportunity of belonging to the EU. Happy anniversary!

It's interesting to revisit the chapters of history. The world war shows you the dark picture of Hypernationalism. 'Refugee Status' is indeed a misnomer because it's a fight for attaining something which in comparison with citizenship is derogation. The condition of the homo sapiens in 'Dabaab Camp' depicts the smothering effect of the refugee crisis. In this paper I have established 'refugee jurisprudence' by interpreting the negative side of volkgeist and Social solidarity. The angle which propagates and serves the dish of Xenophobia. The ultimate reason why persecution happens. The current Geo- Politics is a love affair between history and Jurisprudence. I want to thank Saurabh Chakraborty sir " Assistant Professor of Indian Institute of Legal Studies" for his contribution. #internationalconference #displacementjustice #refugeejurisprudence #jurisprudence #IILS

Ma plus récente publication scientifique, dans la revue Ethnopolitics! Un article co-écrit avec Eyene Okpanachi, disponible en libre accès. Résumé: What factors shape the federal or national governments’ responses to substate identity policies within deeply diverse federal systems? This article answers this question by analysing the role of the President or Prime Minister as ‘bearers’ of national unity, when confronted with (exclusivist) identity policies that may threaten the inclusion of all citizens, in particular minorities residing in jurisdictions dominated by a dominant (ethnocultural, linguistic or religious) group. The empirical evidence draws on the experiences of Canada and Nigeria, focusing in particular on the tension over secularism and the Muslim veil in Québec public institutions, and the adoption of Sharia by twelve Muslim-majority states in Nigeria. The paper demonstrates that while the need to uphold cultural diversity could explain the federal government’s responses to the identity policies implemented in these regions, the primary driver of the responses was the president and prime minister’s political goal of re-election and retaining power. The paper contributes to the literature by stressing the similarities in the political reflexes and strategies utilized by political actors in managing the tension between the constitutional principles of self-rule and shared rule in two federations that are often thought to be so different and, hence, incomparable.
