To find chemical engineering problems to solve, William Tarpeh uses a simple formula. “Name a wastewater, either where it comes from or something about it. Name a pollutant you want to get rid of, and then name a product you’d be interested in making.” This combination has fueled Tarpeh’s interests since he was a Stanford undergraduate and now shapes his vision for finding innovative ways to extract value from wastewater. His latest research focuses on designing and refining ways to reclaim ammonia from nitrate-contaminated wastewater streams. If nitrate can be converted into ammonia directly from wastewater, people could have better access not only to fertilizer and other common chemicals, but also to sanitation. Routes of technological exploitation of agricultural waste for power generation Renato Rocha Batista, Marcelo S Bacelos, Gisele de Lorena Diniz Chaves, Taisa S Lira, Leonardo Arrieche DOI: https://lnkd.in/daHKMb3p Resumo: The use of agricultural residues as a bioenergy source has aroused increasing interest in the bioenergy sector. This paper discusses the exploitation of cocoa and coffee husks using anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis and direct combustion technologies. The structural synthesis method that was used to obtain electricity was performed using a State Tree. Structural elements were combined to form branches for each chemical route. Structural optimisation was conducted using the heuristic method. The promising technological routes included the anaerobic digestion of cocoa husks in a batch reactor and the pyrolysis of coffee husks preceded by pelletisation. The systematic representation of the problem using the process engineering approach was a promising method for evaluating the process of obtaining energy from fruit wastes. I'm excited to share that my latest research has been published in the Journal of the Turkish Chemical Society, Section B: Chemical Engineering. 📄 Title: Kinetics Analysis of Crystal Violet Adsorption from Aqueous Solution onto Flamboyant Pod Biochar 🔬 Our study addresses the significant environmental challenge posed by the persistent synthetic dye, Crystal Violet (CV), in wastewater. We explored the use of biochar derived from agricultural waste, specifically flamboyant pod biochar (FPB), as a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent for CV removal. Our findings demonstrate the high potential of FPB in wastewater treatment, promoting an eco-friendly approach to managing dye contamination. We utilized readily available flamboyant pod waste to produce biochar and conducted comprehensive batch adsorption experiments which yields promising results with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicating a chemisorption mechanism. MSC Position at the University of Laval, Québec, Canada 🇨🇦 ➡️ Environmental Chemistry ➡️ Analytical Chemistry Topic: Environmental assessment of the use of Foam Glass Aggregates in road structures Supervisor: Pr Richard Martel, Centre Eau Terre Environnement de l’Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) & Pr Jean-Pascal Bilodeau, Department of Civil and Water Engineering at Université Laval. Context and Problematic: Foam Glass Aggregates (FGAs) made from recycled glass of various origins are lightweight, insulating and draining material. FGAs are promising for transport infrastructure engineering in cold regions. This material is currently used in Europe, Japan, Russia, and more recently in USA. For the last five years, the Université Laval team, with the support of recyclers and infrastructure managers, has demonstrated the several advantages of this technology compared to traditional methods.Nevertheless, in Quebec, without characterization method adapted to glass matrices to support glass valorization, or a standard context, FGAs are considered as residual materials by the Quebec Ministry of the Environment, as glasses are excluded from other standards. #ICCP WEEK 1 1. Top Problem to Solve With my background in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, here are some impactful problems and opportunities I want to explore i. Renewable Energy in Agriculture: Integrate renewable energy solutions (e.g., solar-powered irrigation systems or biogas for rural areas) to make farms more energy-efficient and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. ii. Waste-to-Resource Technologies: Work on converting agricultural waste into valuable products, like biofuels or organic fertilizers, reducing waste and providing additional income streams for farmers. iii. Precision Agriculture: Use data and technology, like drones and IoT, to monitor crop health, optimize inputs (water, fertilizer), and improve yield while reducing environmental impacts. iv. Water Resource Management: Develop methods to ensure efficient water use, especially in arid regions, by designing systems that maximize water retention and recycling in farming operations. 2. Four Possible Career Paths i. Environmental Consultant: Work with organizations or government agencies to address environmental issues, such as pollution control, land management, and sustainable practices in agriculture and industry. ii. Agricultural Engineer: Design and develop equipment, machinery, and infrastructure that enhance agricultural efficiency and sustainability. iii. Water Resource Engineer: Specialize in water management systems to ensure efficient use of water in agriculture and rural development. iv. Renewable Energy Specialist in Agriculture: Focus on integrating renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, or bioenergy, into agricultural operations. 3. I am delighted to share my recent PhD paper published in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (JECE) via collaborative research between The University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool. #Boron #contamination in water is a growing environmental concern due to its harmful effects on human #health, #agriculture, and #aquatic ecosystems. Even at low concentrations, boron can cause severe health issues, such as reproductive and developmental problems, and it can also affect crop yields and soil quality. Due to its chemical properties, existing water treatment technologies often struggle to remove boron efficiently. In this study, we proposed novel #UiO67-#biochar composites that offer a promising solution, achieving high boron efficiency while being cost-effective and sustainable. However, as boron contamination persists globally, especially in regions relying on irrigation and industrial discharge, scalable and durable solutions like our initiative can provide a promising solution for practical applications.
