No Adverse Impact 2.0, Building Block #4 Regulations & Development. Thursday, August 15th, noon to 1pm EDS. This training module will take a deeper dive into NAI Regulations and Development Standards activities. One of the benefits of properly prepared land use plans and zoning ordinances is that they usually reduce the amount of at-risk floodplain development. Where floodplain development cannot be avoided, it is important to have regulatory programs and standards that can fully protect it from flood damage and help reduce the impact of that development on others. Latest edition of the MA State Building Code adopts Coastal A Zone standards and raised minimum freeboard standards by an additional foot (now 2-3 ft depending on situation). Many years of advocacy by folks at CZM, DCR, and outside of government finally paid off. Next step, expanding to climate projected flood zones and elevations! Thanks to CZ-Mail below the fold for putting me on to this exciting news!

Finishing 2024 by completing another Āpōpō digital badge: LD 220 - Understanding the Land. This course deepened my understanding of natural hazards and land constraints, exceeding my prior due diligence knowledge. It also offers many useful online tools and clearly explains complex technical risks in simple terms, making them easy to be understood. Key message: take the time to understand the land, if you want a good land development project. And the proverb: "Te toto o te tangata he kai, te oranga o te tangata, he whenua, he oneone. While food provides the blood in our veins, our health is drawn from the land and soils." (This reminds us of the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature: caring for the environment is inherently linked to caring for ourselves.) #Land-Development #LD-220 #Land-Development-Engineering #Asset-Management #Āpōpō
