I am thrilled to see the new Invest In Women Taskforce which has been created to make the UK the best place in the world to be a female entrepreneur. If women were to start and scale businesses at the same rate as men, that would mean a potential £250bn boost to the UK economy. Currently, there’s a structural under-representation of female investors and female founders: Just 11% of VC committee members being women Only 2% of equity capital going to female-founded businesses The Invest in Women Taskforce is determined to address the disparity, drive sustainable change and support women at all stages of business growth. We know there are fundamental issues holding back the progress of women in business. Our Small Business Finance Markets report shows that for the past decade for every pound of investment, only 3p went to all-female founder teams. We’re committed to helping improve access to tools, resources, and funding for female entrepreneurs. The Investing in Women Code now has 250 signatories who are committed to supporting the advancement of female entrepreneurship in the UK. The data from the Code shows that all-female founder teams have a higher chance of getting equity if the decision is made by gender-balanced investment committees. The fab new report from Small Business Britain - Female Entrepreneurship: Moving Forward includes some interesting facts, especially around the lack of investment available for women. Most women surveyed for the report self-funded their start-ups and many were fearful of debt which is inherent from upbringing and social conditioning.
