Just had LASIK eye surgery yesterday... being in optics and photonics, I couldn't resist asking the doctors all the laser questions. What kind of lasers are used? how do you map the corrections to the eye? Lucky for me they were actually excited to explain. Cool to experience another example of photonics-enabled industries. This morning, our shipment of VPIphotonics polarized sunglasses arrived at the office. Perfect timing to help with my light sensitivity! In less than two weeks, we’re heading to Photonics West. I'll be at VPIphotonics booth #5201. Swing by, say hi, and grab your own pair of #VPIwear. And maybe learn a thing or two about how we model and simulate lasers. We will be highlighting simulation examples for: • PICs for AI Datacenters • Datacenter Interconnects • Fiber Lasers/Amplifiers • FSO Laser Satcom • Quantum Communications • and more! By the way, my schedule is already mostly full, so if you want to schedule a time, send me a message ASAP and we can get something on our calendars. Looking forward to seeing everyone in San Francisco! SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics #photonics #optics #pw2025

🦉 Discover OWLO's pioneering technology: Matrix Imaging ! 🚀 Want to learn more about our innovative technology? Check out our recent publication in Nature Photonics entitled "𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘅 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟯𝗗 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝘆" to see how we're pushing the boundaries of optical imaging. 🔬 In this groundbreaking proof of concept, we demonstrate how to image deeper in tissue than conventional optical imaging techniques. We do this without labels (no fluorescence), in 3D and with an ultra-fast acquisition (less than one second). Medical Tractor Beam Shrinks Big for Minimally Invasive Surgery 🚀🔬 🌟 Ready to Beam Up: From Particles to Possibilities! ✨ Researchers from the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) have made a groundbreaking advancement in tractor beam technology! They've crafted an ultra-portable design with an incredibly thin, 2-micrometer-thick silicon metasurface—think of it as a microscopic force field! 🌟 This innovation has the potential to revolutionize medical procedures by manipulating particles with light, reducing cell trauma significantly. 💡 The key to this advancement is the "triple helix solenoid beam," which forms when light interacts with the metasurface. This unique beam shape gently attracts particles, paving the way for a less invasive approach to medical procedures. ✨🔬 Medical Applications: Picture intricate brain surgeries or delicate eye procedures done with minimal invasiveness. 🧠👁️ Beyond Medicine: The technology's potential extends beyond healthcare, with uses in precise assembly and contactless manipulation of hazardous materials. ⚙️☣️ Call to Action: What medical procedures or other applications do you think could benefit most from this technology? The QTI team is transforming how breast imaging is done in many ways. We are reducing harm, cost, and concern for women with innovative advancements in technology to ensure superior precision and patient experience. Chief among our advancements in medical imaging is 3D imaging. QTI is the ONLY FDA-cleared medical imaging device to produce native 3D images. Why is this significant? Inherently 3D volumetric imaging offers a number of advantages over image volumes created by concatenating 2D images slices. Acoustic energy cannot be confined to a plane. Therefore, true 3D imaging involves 3D data acquisition, 3D modeling, and 3D visualization. As a result, 3D volumetric imaging can potentially better capture the spatial relationships between structures in three dimensions, providing a more accurate representation of the tissue being imaged. 2D modeling and data collected with a 1D array results in the successive creation of 2D slices which have artifacts. These are then concatenated together to yield 3D visualizations with these artifacts. True 3D imaging utilizes data sampled on a full 2D matrix array to create an image volume image. Compared to 2D stacked images, 3D imaging significantly reduces image artifacts, minimizing missing information while improving image quality, resulting in more accurate tissue characterization and consistency.
