The Salvation Army’s Post

This is going to be a bit of a long post and I'm sure it will be met with some negative feedback, but here goes. So often on this platform, I read post from former broadcasters, about "freeing themselves" from the shackles of a business that no longer cares for its communities and eats its young. They advocate for others to join them and finally have a "life you can call your own". Yes; I know. The industry is not what it was when many of us made the decision to join its ranks. And I know as well as anyone the toll the hours, demands and unpredictability of the business can take on your family. Shout out to my husband of 33+ years and two adult children that know no other life with me. But here's the thing, the problem may not be the industry but the people you surround yourself with. Because last week, was one of the most rewarding of my career as a local broadcaster, because I am surrounded by the right people, who are committed to the core values of this calling. What WXII 12 Triad CW did in conjunction with our community partners at Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC and the #RedCross to support our neighbors in Western North Carolina is why we should *all* want to be local broadcasters. Our license calls on us to serve in the best interest of our communities. And I am so proud of how we not only served but led the relief efforts here in the Piedmont-Triad. And it's why you have to ask yourself is it the industry or perhaps the people I work for and with? Finally, if you have it in your hearts and wallets to give, please do. Leaders and managers are expected to articulate a vision, strategy, or values clearly while also demonstrating their commitment through consistent actions. This alignment fosters trust and credibility among employees and stakeholders, as it shows that leaders not only advocate for certain principles but also embody them in their decision-making and behavior. Veterans Day donation matching Stand-To Match Day **Next Monday, November 11, 2024** Stand-To Match Day provides an opportunity for growth for participating organizations that strive to do good works and an opportunity for the community to support these causes. On this day, donations made through the Armed Forces Community Foundation to participating funds will receive a 50% match that can be used for their most crucial needs. The Patterson Family Foundation will award up to $70,000 to AFCF for dollar per dollar raised during match days, with up to $35,000 saved for upcoming community enrichment project opportunities and up to $35,000 for participating organizations. Fundraising goal: War Horses for Veterans is seeking $20,000 in funds to assist us in building a new barn. Our current barn was built in the late 1800’s and has been updated however, lacks the room, storage of equipment, and feeding supplies to meet our current needs. With the growth over the last several years, our addition of more horses and equipment has been steady with the demand of our programs. Currently, we have been using temporary housing in the lower level of our property to house horses. This structure is exposed to the elements all year with open portions of each stall for air flow. The temporary stalls are not ideal, which has caused us not to use all the stalls available due to the deterioration of the structure. SAN ANGELO, TX — Operation Rolling Hope‘s mission is to raise $10,000 to purchase and remodel a decommissioned military bus that will serve as a mobile street outreach hub for homeless individuals, both veterans and civilians across the Concho Valley and beyond. The bus will provide showers, meals, supplies, haircuts, free Wi-Fi, sleeping quarters with bunks, and a kitchenette. The bus itself is priced at $6500 and the remodel costs are estimated at $3500 minimum. Moreover, the bus will also be deployed during natural disasters such as fires, floods, and tornadoes around Texas. All contributions will directly fund the bus purchase and renovations. TEN REASONS WHY I LOVE AND SUPPORT THE SALVATION ARMY: Several years ago, after extensive research, the late Peter Drucker announced his conclusive finding: “The Salvation Army is the most effective organization in the U.S.” He did not say the most effective nonprofit, but “the most effective organization.” In other words, the Salvation Army beat out the stalwarts such as IBM and Johnson & Johnson. For the last several years, I have been given an insider view of the Salvation Army as a member of our local Advisory Board. Here are nine more reasons why I love and support the Salvation Army: 1️⃣ 100% of donated money stays in the local community into which it was donated. 2️⃣  For 150 years, it has been accomplishing its mission. 3️⃣  When women were barred from the corporate C-Suite, the Salvation Army promoted women to CEO and other executive positions. 4️⃣  We do not discriminate for any reason. As one of my fellow board members says, “If the devil himself showed up homeless on the streets, the Salvation Army would step in to help.” 5️⃣ One of the highest success rates in the nation for those caught in the cycle of substance abuse and addiction. 6️⃣ A history of innovation. 7️⃣ Band-width and commitment. A couple of years ago, my local city needed an emergency shelter set up on Christmas Day because sub-zero temperatures were coming. The Salvation Army had the staff and infrastructure to meet the need. 8️⃣ Everyone seems to have a Salvation Army story, like a woman who has worked at our domestic violence shelter for nearly 40 years. As a young girl, her mother was a victim. 9️⃣ A holistic approach. The Salvation Army has a three-pronged approach to its services: feed the body, the soul, and the spirit. My Favorite Projects, Part 1 -- My Love for Non-Profits Back in 2013 I started to work with a non-profit organization in Kokomo, Indiana during my time at Verizon. Verizon had an outstanding program for NP's that allowed them access to technology that, previously, had been outside their reach financially. I was able to see, first hand, the benefits of giving those tireless workers a world-class solution at a price that made it affordable. Fast-forward to 2019 when I started work as an integrator. Reached back out to them, and sure enough, they had a need as well. Multiple buildings that needed access control and surveillance, and one of them was a domestic violence shelter. I designed a high-end surveillance and access control system for that building and got it deployed. It took some time, it took some grant-funding, but we got it done. My goal was simple: Make those residents feel safe, that they had one less thing to worry about in their lives. Providing a high-end solution, having the patience to see it through from start to finish, and seeing those results? I get chills when I think about it. Still committed to providing those solutions, and I'll do it again in the future. #surveillance #accesscontrol #nonprofit
